Ibrahim Shujau, the PNC member for the Baarah constituency in the People’s Majlis, has stated that when this government came to power, there were no dollars in the country and that “the dollars had been consumed”. Speaking at a PNC gathering tonight, Shujau said that because the dollars were depleted, the first thing they had to do upon coming to power was to “lock the Sovereign Development Fund”. He said that they created a law regarding the Sovereign Development Fund and made it so that whoever comes to power cannot access it.

“President Muizz had to make it so that the Sovereign Development Fund couldn’t be touched for the sake of the beloved Maldivian people. The previous government had taken loans from it, but now they’re saying that the dollar problem hasn’t been solved,” Shujau said. Shujau stated that the MDP has forgotten the state of the country when this government came to power. He also said that it was that party that had brought the country to that state. He said that after this government took over, they worked hard to put the economy back on track. Shujau also noted that they had begun working on solving major issues in the country and mentioned that they had implemented the tobacco law.

At the gathering, Shujau said that the PNC is working on strengthening the party’s activities by traveling to islands in the atolls. He also said that the party will win the seats for the Male’ constituency in the upcoming local council elections. Shujau criticized former President Yameen Abdul Gayoom at the gathering. He alleged that the former president is one of the people who most often refers to PNC members as thieves. Shujau also said that the PNC will not engage in corruption and that it is not the party’s policy. Shujau stated that this government wants to run a party-based administration.
