Male’ Water’ Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) has begun testing the water network established to circulate freshwater between Male’ and Hulhumale’. A pipe was laid alongside the Sinamale’ Bridge, which opened in 2018, to circulate freshwater between Male’ and Hulhumale’. Work on connecting Male’ and Hulhumale’ with a water network using this pipe began in 2018. However, the work has not progressed satisfactorily over the past 5 years.
After President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu assumed office, this government has taken the initiative to restart the water network project. MWSC has now revealed that this work is very close to completion.

Speaking on PSM News’ Raajje Miadu program, MWSC Managing Director Abdul Matheen Mohamed said that the pipe used to establish the water network has been cleaned and connected at both ends. He added that temporary testing work has begun, and currently, 3000 tons of water are being circulated. Matheen also stated that when all the work under this project is completed, 20,000 tons of water will be able to circulate from one island to the other.
“Looking at the entire system, a pump station needs to be established. The construction of the pump station building will be completed next month. Once the pump station is finished, pumps will be installed, and the electrical network of that place will need to be upgraded,” Matheen said. MWSC aims to start the water network service by mid-year. As such, the company estimates that the service will begin in July or August.
The purpose of the water network connecting Male’ and Hulhumale’ is to ensure water security in the Male’ area. With this network, if there is an issue with water supply in Male’ or Hulhumale’, water can be easily supplied from one island to the other.
