With Sanae Takaichi’s election as the leader leader of Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), the country is on the verge of appointing its first female Prime Minister. Following the resignation of Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, 64-year-old Takaichi has been elected as the party’s new leader, and a vote on her appointment as Prime Minister is expected to be held in the Japanese legislature on the 15th of this month. With the LDP-led coalition holding a majority in the legislature, there are not expected to be any major obstacles to Takaichi’s appointment as Prime Minister.

Ishiba resigned amid significant public dissatisfaction with the government due to rising living costs in Japan. Takaichi supports increased government spending to improve the country’s economic situation. She also opposes raising interest rates on loans. After being elected as the party leader, Takaichi shared her vision of increasing money circulation in the economy by lowering interest rates during a press conference. However, she stated that considering the country’s current economic situation, caution must be exercised in every financial decision.

In addition to the economy, one of Takaichi’s main promises is to take swift action against the rapidly increasing number of foreigners in Japan.
