After making serious allegations against the current government, Supreme Court Justice Husnu Al Suood has resigned from his position today. In his resignation letter, Suood stated that after the Supreme Court decided it had jurisdiction to hear the case seeking to nullify the constitutional amendment that would result in MPs losing their seats if they leave or are expelled from their party, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s government has been unconstitutionally influencing the judiciary.
Suood said that in order to prevent the hearing of the case regarding MPs losing their seats, three Supreme Court justices were suspended, and a bill was passed in the Parliament to reduce the number of Supreme Court justices. He added that President Muizzu is unconstitutionally influencing the Supreme Court to decide the case as he wishes by intimidating all Supreme Court justices.
“In protest of this, I have resigned from my position as a Justice of the Supreme Court of the Maldives, effective immediately,” Suood said. Suood was appointed as a Supreme Court Justice on December 8, 2019. At the time of Suood’s resignation today, along with Suood, Justice Dr. Azmiralda Zahir and Justice Mahaz Ali have also been suspended by the JSC since the 26th of last month. The three justices were suspended following information sent by the ACC to the JSC regarding a case under investigation by the ACC.
