Strong protests against Anwar as cost of living rises in Malaysia

Thousands of Malaysians have gathered on the streets of the capital, Kuala Lumpur, to raise their voices against Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s government as the cost of living increases and prices continue to rise. Protesters are calling for Anwar’s resignation, claiming that his government has failed to deliver on its promises of a reform agenda.

The demonstrators have assembled at Merdeka Square in Kuala Lumpur. Opposition political parties are also participating in the protest, with police estimating that the number of participants could exceed 18,000. Many protesters are wearing T-shirts with messages calling for Anwar’s resignation.

Anwar was elected to his current term in November 2022. His biggest campaign promise was his reform agenda. However, his government has faced public criticism for increasing the goods and services tax to boost state revenue. Additionally, concerns have grown among the public about potential price hikes due to reforms in the subsidy system.

To address these concerns, Anwar announced new measures this week, including cash aid for the poorest families and reducing fuel prices. The government stated that these steps were taken to control and prevent increases in living costs and prices.

However, some protesters said that with the government’s newly announced taxes, electricity prices have risen, burdening businesses and potentially leading to significant changes in goods and commodity prices. “They’re taxing the producers [business companies], so food prices will go up,” said one protester.

Anwar has also faced allegations of interfering with the judiciary. Many believe he is not doing enough to combat corruption. One reason for this is the recent withdrawal of charges against some individuals who were on trial for corruption allegations. This decision has benefited Anwar’s close associates. Additionally, criticism has been directed at Anwar’s government for delaying judicial appointments. However, Anwar denies accusations of interfering with the judiciary.

One notable face in the protests against Anwar was former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, who turns 100 this month. Addressing the protesters, Mahathir accused Anwar’s government of abusing power and filing charges against opposition party leaders. “They are charging innocent people, and criminals are being freed,” he said.
