STELCO said that work at the powerhouse in Hulhumale’ has been scheduled for this morning. As a result, power may be cut in some areas of Male’ and Hulhumale’ from 6:00 AM to 10:00 AM tomorrow morning, according to the company.
STELCO stated that the power outages in affected areas would last for about an hour. They also mentioned that power would not be cut to facilities providing essential services to the public.
Providing information to journalists about the power cuts in Male’ and Hulhumale’, STELCO’s Managing Director Hussein Fahmy said that since the establishment of the Hulhumale’ powerhouse, due to the increasing population and changes in power demand, they haven’t been able to install additional engines. As a result, they can’t properly carry out the out the necessary work by shutting down the existing engines. Therefore, Fahmy said that all generators at the Hulhumale’ powerhouse would need to be shut down to carry out essential work.
“While this work is being done, approximately 50 megawatts will be removed from our network. As a result, we might need to implement load shedding in Male’ and Hulhumale’. However, we are moving towards controlled load shedding. We will keep informing our customers that power may be cut for half an hour or 45 minutes at different locations at different times,” Fahmy said.
STELCO’s engineer Ibrahim Nishad said that although the work is scheduled from 6:00 AM to 10:00 AM, they won’t be cutting power to all of Male’ and Hulhumale’ at once.
“We will cut power in each area for about an hour. And we will work to restore power as quickly as possible,” Nishad said.
Currently, power is supplied to the Male’ area using powerhouses in Male’ and Hulhumale’. To carry out the planned work at the Hulhumale’ powerhouse, it has been decided to shut down all 6 engines at that powerhouse.
