The state has terminated the agreement made with former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb in connection with the MMPRC grand corruption case. In a statement released tonight, the Prosecutor General’s (PG) Office said that PG Abbas Shareef has decided today to terminate the immunity and cooperation agreements with Adeeb and three others related to the MMPRC corruption cases. They are:
1. Ahmed Adeeb Abdul Ghafoor, H. Saamara
2. Ahmed Ishfah Ali, M. Land of Garden
3. Mohamed Allam Latheef, M. Cessna
4. Mohamed Hussain, G. Oivali
Additionally, the agreement with Abdullah Ziyath, former Managing Director of MMPRC, was terminated in August 2022. The PG’s Office stated that the decision to terminate the agreements was made because the investigative authorities had informed that Adeeb and the others were not providing adequate cooperation for the investigation of the case and the recovery of the state’s lost funds, despite the agreements being made for these purposes.
With the termination of these agreements, the police and Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) have been instructed to proceed with the investigations of cases against these individuals that were previously on hold due to the agreements, and to submit them to the PG’s Office as soon as possible.
Adeeb was previously sentenced to 20 years in prison and fined 2 million rufiyaa after being found guilty of seven charges related to the 1.2 billion rufiyaa MMPRC corruption case. Adeeb’s sentence was later commuted and he was released during former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s administration, a decision that drew widespread criticism.
Adeeb was freed under the president’s discretionary power in the Clemency Act. The 20-year sentence and 2 million rufiyaa fine were imposed in 2020 as a reduced sentence following a plea agreement with the state. Adeeb had been in jail since former President Abdulla Yameen’s administration, though he was under house arrest at times due to various health reasons and also received treatment abroad on some occasions.
