Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has launched a major initiative to upgrade the Rubber Tyred Gantry (RTG) cranes used for container handling at the Malé Commercial Harbor.

According to MPL, these extensive upgrades are being undertaken for the first time in approximately 19 years.

The company stated that this project is a significant effort to enhance and maintain the existing crane fleet. The project is structured to be implemented in two distinct phases.

MPL detailed that the first phase focuses on modernizing the cranes’ control and drive systems. The second phase will involve upgrading the power units and engines of the machinery.

With the first phase of the project already underway, MPL expects to commence the second phase by July of this year.

The company highlighted that the RTG cranes currently in operation have been in service since 2007. Given their 19-year lifespan, MPL emphasized that these upgrades are essential to maintain operational standards and ensure continued reliability.

Delays in cargo clearance have been a long-standing concern for many businesses. MPL anticipates that these upgrades will significantly accelerate port operations and resolve existing challenges in cargo handling. Furthermore, the company noted that this enhancement will streamline the overall cargo clearance process.

As MPL works to upgrade its cargo handling equipment, it continues to implement broader measures to improve its services. In this regard, the company has also announced that starting today, vessels arriving in the Maldives will be permitted to enter the Port Limit Area 24 hours a day.
