Seven political parties in the Maldives have agreed to work together on issues of violence against women and signed an agreement yesterday. The agreement, initiated by the UK’s Westminster Foundation for Democracy, was signed by the Adhaalath Party, Maldivian Democratic Party, Maldives Development Alliance, Maldives National Party, People’s National Congress, People’s National Front, and The Democrats.

In a statement released by the Foundation, it was said that this agreement is an important one based on extensive research on the Maldivian political landscape. The agreement details the steps political parties need to take to empower women in the political arena and to prevent violence against women.

The statement from the Foundation highlighted that the aim is to reduce the long-standing barriers faced by women in the political sphere through this agreement and bring about notable reformative changes. It also mentioned that the goal is to facilitate opportunities for women to have a say in national-level decision-making, paving the way for establishing a robust and inclusive democratic environment in the Maldives.
