A cornerstone of the government’s policy is to establish a robust transportation network connecting the islands of the Maldives. In this regard, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu places significant emphasis on expanding seaplane services as a means to stimulate local economies and enhance the standard of living for citizens. Consequently, seaplane operations have already commenced in N. Velidhoo and AA. Thoddoo. With scheduled flights set to begin in Thoddoo by February next year, this initiative will provide a permanent solution to the challenges faced by travelers during periods of rough seas.
The introduction of seaplane services at a time when local tourism is flourishing represents a significant advancement for the guesthouse industry. Furthermore, this development will facilitate more efficient medical evacuations and essential travel, while fostering the growth of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and empowering residents economically. Maldivian, the national airline, continues to broaden these services. A recent example is the air connectivity established between the four southernmost atolls, which has greatly benefited citizens traveling for medical treatment and educational purposes.
