Religious scholars have praised the decision to broadcast the call to prayer (adhan) at the new terminal of Velana International Airport.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu announced on social media that for the first time in Maldivian history, the call to prayer will be heard at the national airport. The President stated that the adhan will be broadcast five times a day at the new terminal of Velana International Airport.
This decision by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has been receiving praise from the public and religious scholars. The Minister of Islamic Affairs, Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, expressed gratitude to the President for this arrangement in a post on X. The Minister also noted that the adhan is a sublime symbol representing Islamic guidance.
Additionally, Sheikh Ahmed Sameer, President of the Scholars’ Council of Jamiyyathus Salaf and Vice President of the association, said that the President’s decision to broadcast the adhan five times at Velana International Airport, the main gateway to the Maldives, is an important step in demonstrating the country’s Islamic identity.
Dr. Ali Zahir bin Saeed Qasim, Vice Chancellor of the Islamic University, called this a historic move and a good omen. Religious scholar Shafeeu Abdullah also stated that this is a very good decision. Many other scholars have praised the President’s decision as well.
As the Maldives is a 100% Muslim country, protecting Islamic unity and promoting Islamic traditions is a key priority of the current government. This is evident in actions such as closing government offices during the last 10 days of Ramadan and organizing activities like broadcasting takbeer on the streets during Eid and other occasions.
