First Lady Madam Sajida Mohamed has said that we need to hurry to provide assistance to children before they meet in courtrooms for violating laws and regulations. She said this while speaking at the opening of the “National Juvenile Justice Conference 2025”, which was held for the first time in the Maldives. Speaking as the guest of honor at the ceremony held at Villa Nautica to start the National Juvenile Justice Conference 2025, First Lady Madam Sajida Mohamed said that the environment in which children who are exposed to crime have to live plays a major role in their involvement in crime.

She also said that when society labels children in a certain way and makes them feel like criminals, the negative habits seen from children before they commit major crimes are a plea for help, even if they cannot express it. She noted that we need to help these children before they become harsh and violent people due to society’s perceptions. Therefore, the First Lady said that we need to hurry today to become people who provide the care and assistance needed for these children before they meet in courtrooms for committing major crimes that violate laws and regulations. The First Lady also highlighted an example of this in her speech.

“Statistics show that before a 14-year-old was arrested for murder, the child had interacted with relevant state agencies 191 times in various ways. The question that arises at this point is how many opportunities did we have to create opportunities for that child.” Madam Sajida said.

First Lady Sajida Mohamed has appealed to all relevant parties to work towards change through the National Juvenile Justice Conference 2025 over the next two days. She appealed to work on finding solutions through this conference, remembering that children exposed to crime were once victims themselves. She also requested those working in the education sector to be aware of the various changes seen in children and to give them extra attention.

In her speech, the First Lady Madam Sajida Mohamed highlighted the situation of children at risk in society. She expressed concern about the situations faced by children who are victims of sexual abuse, children who are exposed to the dangers of drugs and gang crimes, and children who choose the wrong path due to lack of care and compassion as a result of not receiving justice for various issues they faced in childhood through the system.

She also said that while the state budget spends about a billion rufiyaa annually on various efforts to ensure the protection of children, it needs to be done through a robust system. She emphasized the importance of making this system one that provides protection from the circumstances that led to crime, rather than rushing to punish.

In the President’s post, he highlighted that this is the goal desired by the people, and in the journey towards achieving this goal, the government will move forward closely with the people and together with the people. He also raised the question of why political opposition parties oppose whenever an anti-corruption effort is initiated, and called on political opposition parties to participate responsibly in this journey.

“Maldives 2.0”, which is being implemented to execute the government’s digitalization policy, is a program inaugurated by the government to work collaboratively across all state institutions and lead the Maldives towards revolutionary and reformative changes in the digital sphere. The government says this is a project that will be carried out over the next 3 years to implement the government’s digital transformation policy.

It has been revealed that the UK continues to supply weapons to Israel despite suspending some arms export licenses. Last September, the UK suspended 30 out of 350 licenses for arms exports to Israel. The Foreign Office stated that these licenses were suspended due to the possibility of the weapons being used in violation of international humanitarian law. They also mentioned that the unsuspended licenses were for items such as goggles and helmets.

A report released jointly by the Palestinian Youth Movement, Progressive International, and Workers for a Free Palestine states that even after the license suspensions, the UK has supplied 8,630 various weapons to Israel, including bombs and missiles. Despite repeated statements by UK Foreign Secretary David Cameron, Chancellor Jeremy Hunt, and other ministers in Parliament that the UK had ended direct supply of F-35 fighter jet components to Israel after September 2023, the report highlights evidence of multiple instances of such components being directly supplied to Israel since then. The report also states that this arms supply continues uninterrupted.

The report further states that the three organizations obtained these findings from Israeli tax authorities, revealing that UK Foreign Secretary Cameron has misled both Parliament and the public.”

India and Pakistan exchange attacks, all damage to civilians in Kashmir

Two major military powers, India and Pakistan, have begun exchanging attacks using heavy weapons. India and Pakistan, both of which have acquired nuclear weapons capabilities, began exchanging attacks with heavy weapons at a time when India had launched a ballistic missile attack on Pakistan. India has said that under Operation Sindoor, it attacked nine areas in Pakistan in response to an armed attack on a tourist area in Indian Kashmir on April 22, which killed 26 civilians. India suspects that terrorists affiliated with armed groups supported by Pakistan were behind those attacks.

Although India said its missile attacks were aimed at militant positions, Pakistan has said that civilians were killed in those attacks. Pakistan has said that 26 people were killed and 46 were injured in those attacks. Videos showing damage to civilian homes and mosques in India’s attacks have been made public. After India’s missile attack, the Indian government said it had retaliated for the attack on its tourists. The Indian government has also said that India prioritized attacking militants directly without confronting the Pakistani military, in order to defend against potential future attacks by such militants.

Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has condemned India’s attacks in the strongest terms. He described it as a very cowardly act. And he announced that the Pakistani military was retaliating. The Pakistani military has shot down five Indian warplanes in the first hour of retaliatory attacks and begun attacking Indian military positions with heavy weapons. In response, India has also begun confronting Pakistan using heavy weapons. India has said that 10 civilians were killed and 48 were injured in Pakistan’s attacks.

Airlines traveling to India and Pakistan are canceling flights. Qatar Airways has also temporarily suspended flights to Pakistan after the country closed its airspace. Air India, IndiGo and SpiceJet have also suspended flights to some areas. India has suspended implementation of an important water-sharing agreement with Pakistan. In response, Pakistan has banned Indian-affiliated aircraft from entering Pakistani airspace. In addition, both countries have now downgraded diplomatic relations, banned trade, and temporarily suspended issuing visas to each other’s citizens.

In preparation for a potentially prolonged confrontation, India and Pakistan have taken many steps over the past two to three days. Pakistan has tested new missiles twice. And India has carried out security preparations in various states of the country. India and Pakistan have fought four wars so far. Three of those wars were fought over the Kashmir issue.

Trump asks FIFA to give Russia a World Cup spot to stop the war

Former US President Donald Trump has asked FIFA to give Russia a spot in next year’s World Cup in the United States as a way to stop the ongoing war in Ukraine. During a press conference at the White House with FIFA President Gianni Infantino, Trump began discussing this topic, apparently unaware that Russia had been temporarily suspended from FIFA competitions. This suspension was due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Trump has been working to end this war since announcing his bid for a second term as US President last November. Upon learning of Russia’s suspension, he even asked the FIFA President if it was true. “I didn’t know that. Is that a fact?” Trump asked. When Infantino confirmed it was true, Trump suggested that giving Russia the opportunity to play in the World Cup could be a powerful incentive to stop the war.

“They’re suspended temporarily for a short period of time. But we’re hoping that Russia will be given an opportunity as a way of bringing peace. It’s possible. It’d be a great incentive, wouldn’t it?” Trump asked. He stated that Russia is losing 5,000 young people every day and that this needs to stop. He added that as the US President, he couldn’t do anything to include Russia in the World Cup, but that the FIFA President is the “boss of soccer.”

Trump indirectly suggested that Infantino could make this happen. However, FIFA did not respond to these comments. Next year’s World Cup in the United States will feature a total of 48 countries competing.

Manchester United’s midfielder Bruno Fernandes wants to stay at the club, according to coach Ruben Amorim. The 30-year-old Fernandes’ contract with Manchester United runs until 2027. Talk about Fernandes has increased following media reports that Saudi Arabia’s Al Hilal wants him.
