New genset installed to improve Velidhoo’s electricity situation

A new genset has been installed to improve the electricity situation in N. Velidhoo. In a post on X, Fenaka Corporation stated that as part of the ongoing efforts to provide sustainable electricity service, a 1000 kW genset brought to Velidhoo has now been installed and put into service to improve the island’s electricity situation.

Providing sustainable basic rights such as water, sewerage, and electricity to the people living in all islands of the Maldives is a promise of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu. Fenaka is carrying out numerous works to fulfill this promise. As such, the company is working on providing new gensets to islands facing electricity issues.

Fenaka has also recently announced a tender for acquiring generators. In this announcement, Fenaka has revealed its need for generators ranging from 250 kW to 1600 kW. The company needs the most of 600 kW generators, requiring eight sets of this type. The least required are 1600 kW generators, with a need for two of this type.

Agreement with ADK to expand medical tourism in the Maldives!

The Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) and ADK Hospital have signed an agreement to expand medical tourism in the Maldives. The agreement was signed at a ceremony held at MMPRC, with Ibrahim Shiury, CEO of MMPRC, signing on behalf of the corporation. Ahmed Affal, Managing Director, signed on behalf of ADK.

Shiury stated that the Maldives has long been known as a destination for luxury services, and by diversifying tourism offerings to include medical tourism, they are not only strengthening the country’s popularity as a global travel destination but also helping to develop the healthcare infrastructure in the Maldives.

This agreement aims to promote the Maldives as a destination for medical tourism, combining the country’s renowned luxury tourism sector with high-quality medical services. It represents a significant step in diversifying the Maldives’ tourism industry and enhancing its healthcare capabilities.

“This collaboration with ADK Hospital is a significant step towards realizing this vision,” Shiury said. Under this agreement, MMPRC and ADK Hospital will work together to establish the Maldives as a destination for high-quality medical services. MMPRC expects that this agreement will increase the contribution of medical tourism to the Maldives’ economic growth and provide specialized health facilities for international tourists.

Expenditure on Aasandha and subsidies begins to decrease

The government’s expenditure on the unlimited Aasandha scheme and subsidies has started to decrease. According to statistics released by the Ministry of Finance, the government’s spending on Aasandha and subsidies as of the fifth day of this month has decreased compared to last year.

Last year, the government spent 3.68 billion rufiyaa on subsidies during the same period. This year, the expenditure for the same period is 3.44 billion rufiyaa. Compared to last year, spending on Aasandha has also decreased. While 3.2 billion rufiyaa was spent last year, this year’s expenditure is 1.88 billion rufiyaa. Due to the high spending on Aasandha and subsidies by the previous government and the misuse of these schemes by some parties, the current government has taken numerous measures to curb this.

As such, the prices of 250 commonly used medicines in the Maldives have been controlled, and a system has been implemented to import medicines in bulk in collaboration with STO. The government has also decided to change the subsidy system to a targeted subsidy system starting next year.

President decides not to rent a place for three ministries until a permanent solution is found

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has stated that it has been decided not to rent a place for the three ministries affected by last Thursday’s fire incident until a permanent solution is found.

The fire incident at the Housing Ministry and Construction Ministry buildings on Ameenee Magu, opposite the Voice of Maldives, has rendered both buildings unusable. The nearby Green Building, which houses the Environment Ministry and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), was also damaged by the fire.

While the services of these three ministries were temporarily suspended, they resumed operations yesterday at the Dharubaaruge. Office setups have been installed at Dharubaaruge to restart these services.

During his visit to Dharubaaruge today, where the ministries are now operating, the President spoke with the staff and noted that the fire incident resulted in an immeasurable loss. He acknowledged the loss of personal belongings of staff members and stated that it would be difficult to imagine the hardships they face. However, he commended the positive attitude, patience, and cooperation of the staff in restarting operations.

In this meeting, the President said that efforts are being made to create a normal office environment in collaboration with government institutions. He mentioned ongoing work to increase the number of toilets, provide cafeteria services, and acquire necessary electronics and computer systems.

The President revealed that it has been decided not to rent a place for the three ministries affected by the fire incident until a permanent solution is found. Instead, he said they are considering providing services from a government facility until a permanent solution is reached.

After this visit, the President met with the task force formed to relocate the three ministries to Dharubaaruge temporarily and some company executives to get the latest updates on the work. Following his visit to Dharubaaruge, the President also visited Galolhu School to check on the preparations being made to resume the suspended services of the City Council. He met with the staff there and inquired about their needs and how the work is progressing.

China has always been a trusted friend of the Maldives: Vice President

Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef has stated that China has always been a trusted friend of the Maldives. Speaking at a group meeting with leaders participating in the 3rd China-Indian Ocean Region Forum on Blue Economy Development Cooperation and Chinese government officials, the Vice President said he sincerely thanked the China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA) and the Yunnan Provincial People’s Government for their warm hospitality.

The Vice President highlighted that China has always been a trusted friend of the Maldives and stated that he considers the Maldives’ sustained commitment to the ‘One-China’ principle as the main pillar in maintaining relations between the two countries. Furthermore, he noted that the 3rd China-Indian Ocean Region Forum on Blue Economy Development Cooperation was an important opportunity for cooperation and sharing experiences between the two countries.

The meeting was chaired by Wang Yong, Vice Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC). After the meeting, the Vice President took a commemorative photo with Chinese government officials and important foreign guests.

Installment payment option introduced for vehicle annual fees and fines

A regulation has been formulated and implemented to allow installment payments for outstanding annual fees and fines owed to the state by owners of land and sea vehicles. The regulation for installment payments of annual fees and fines related to land and sea vehicles has been published in the Government Gazette today. Under this regulation, everyone has the opportunity to pay in installments any outstanding annual fees and fines owed to the state for land and sea vehicles that are required to be paid once a year.

Following the gazetting of this regulation, Transport Minister Mohamed Ameen has thanked President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu. In a post on “X”, Ameen stated that President Dr. Muizzu’s vision is to find the easiest and most convenient ways for the people in every matter. The regulation states that if certain conditions are met, those who request will be given the opportunity to pay the outstanding money owed to the state in installments as per the regulation. These conditions include: the amount of unpaid dues exceeding MVR 10,000, the money being past the payment deadline, submitting a request to pay in installments under the regulation, not having been previously given the opportunity to pay in installments, and the applicant being the owner of the vehicle.

According to the regulation, requests for installment payments should be submitted to the Ministry using a designated form. If an application does not meet the conditions, the applicant must be informed in writing within a maximum of seven days. The regulation states that if a commitment fee is paid, an agreement must be drawn up between the applicant and the Ministry for installment payments. This agreement must include details such as the duration of the agreement, payment schedule, procedures for handling any additional fees or fines related to the vehicle during the agreement period, and actions to be taken in case of breach of agreement.

The regulation states that the Ministry has the right to terminate the agreement if payments are not made for 30 days without a valid reason, in accordance with the agreement. Valid reasons are considered to be natural disasters or illnesses that render one unable to make the payment.

President announces mechanism to disburse fishermen’s payments within 48 Hours, starting Tuesday

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the mechanism for disbursing payments owed to fishermen within 48 hours will be implemented starting Tuesday.

He made this statement in his address to the citizens of K. Gaafaru on Monday morning, fulfilling a key presidential pledge.

In his speech, the President noted that by Monday afternoon, the Administration had already disbursed MVR 38 million in payments to fishermen. Of this, MVR 32.4 million was deposited into the bank accounts of 196 individuals with accounts at BML, while an additional MVR 5.6 million was deposited into the accounts of 20 individuals with accounts at MIB. With these payments, the President confirmed that the backlog of payments had been cleared and assured that such a backlog would not occur again in the future.

The President also affirmed that fishermen would no longer face issues accessing fuel. From December 10 onwards, fuel will be available at base rates from STO and/or FSM outlets in K. Himmafushi, GA. Kooddoo, Lh. Felivaru, and S. Hulhumeedhoo. Additionally, STO will provide fuel at base rates from MIFCO boats operating in GA. Kooddoo and Lh. Felivaru.

Furthermore, the President announced that the Government would grant legal recognition to the fishermen’s registry, which will offer fishermen financial opportunities and benefits. The regulation for the fishermen’s registry is set to be gazetted on Thursday. Once published, those listed on the registry will be eligible for benefit schemes provided by BML, MIB, and STO.

President Dr Muizzu emphasised that his administration is strategically working to develop and strengthen the resilience of the fishing sector. He added that the Administration is prepared to transfer the operation of ice plants to local councils if fishermen wish to maintain a decentralised governance system. He also revealed that efforts to expand cold storage capacity are already underway, with the goal of increasing fish processing capacity.

The President further expressed his commitment to enhancing the capacity and investment in the sector, ensuring that it contributes significantly to the nation’s Gross Domestic Product.

2025 to be the year with the most housing construction projects implemented within a single year: The President

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has stated that 2025 will be the year with the most housing construction programmes implemented within a single year.

The President made this statement whilst speaking at a meeting with residents of Himmafushi during his current tour of Male’ Atoll islands.

The President highlighted that housing is a significant issue in this region, and although a land reclamation programme was carried out in Himmafushi, housing remains crucial for making optimal use of this land. In his speech, he mentioned that the Government’s foremost priority next year will be implementing housing programmes, followed by improvements in the education and healthcare sectors. He noted that Himmafushi also has requirements in these two areas.

He stated that several school-related works and healthcare service expansion programmes will be implemented next year under the Public Sector Investment Programme (PSIP)’s New Policy Initiative.

At the meeting, the President addressed the issue of damaged roads across multiple islands. He indicated that the Government has prioritised the installation of water and sewerage systems before undertaking road construction projects – road construction will commence only in islands where these essential infrastructure systems are complete. Looking ahead to next year, the President confirmed that in line with his manifesto commitments, the construction of main roads across numerous islands will receive priority attention.

Furthermore, he outlined plans to launch economic development initiatives in collaboration with the council, focusing on sectors of interest to residents, including local tourism, fishing, agriculture and other industries.

The President assured that the Government will pay considerable attention to Himmafushi’s development and implement important programmes for the residents within the next year.

Following this meeting, in a separate ceremony, the President inaugurated WAMCO’s safe waste management service establishment in Himmafushi.

President concludes trip to North Ari Atoll and Male’ Atoll islands

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has returned to Male’ this evening following the completion of his trip to North Ari Atoll and several islands within Male’ Atoll.

During his trip, the President conducted visits to various islands across both atolls, where he held meetings with local residents, council members and Women’s Development Committee (WDC) representatives. These consultations focused on discussing development priorities and addressing the needs identified by the local communities.

The visit forms part of the President’s ongoing programme of council consultations, which commenced earlier this year. With the completion of this latest tour, the President has now held discussions with 185 councils across the country.

A senior Government delegation accompanied the President throughout the trip.

Gaafaru development projects set for next year: The President

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has stated that development projects planned for Gaafaru will proceed next year. The President made these remarks whilst speaking at a meeting with Gaafaru residents during his ongoing tour of Malé Atoll islands.

In his speech, the President acknowledged that development projects in Gaafaru had not progressed at his desired pace during the past year; however, he stated that the development projects he promised for Gaafaru would commence under the budget allocated for the coming year.

Speaking about Gaafaru’s harbour and its need for expansion and repairs, the President revealed that he had tasked the Council and Ministry with developing an expanded design to address both medium and long-term development needs. Once finalised, he confirmed the project would be incorporated into the PSIP (Public Sector Investment Programme) and begin without delay.

The President announced that improvements to the Gaafaru Health Centre and expanded school capacity would be implemented next year under new PSIP policy initiatives. Addressing concerns about the local ice plant, he explained that while its capacity would eventually be doubled as promised, the immediate priority would be establishing facilities in communities currently lacking such infrastructure; however, he reassured residents that the pledge to enhance Gaafaru’s existing ice plant remained firm.

The President also assured residents that he would carefully attend to various other projects in different sectors, including sports and waste management, without neglecting any aspect of development.
