President Donald Trump has hinted at easing the harsh restrictive measures imposed by the United States against Syria. He revealed this while speaking to reporters, referring to a question posed by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Western powers and the Arab world, in addition to the United States, have imposed restrictive measures against that country in connection with its civil war. The war ended after 14 years with the overthrow of former President Bashar al-Assad in a coup. Assad’s government was overthrown by the terrorist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS). Syria is currently ruled by an HTS government. The position of president is held by the group’s leader, Ahmad al-Shara. With the overthrow of the government, Assad fled to Russia and sought protection in Moscow.

The United States has presented conditions to the HTS government that must be met before lifting the restrictive measures imposed against Syria. However, Shara’s government has faced major challenges in fulfilling these conditions. The main reason is that the country’s economy has been sh’s economy has been shattered due to the restrictive measures. And it has been isolated from the international financial system. “We may ease the measures taken against Syria, because it’s about giving them a chance for a new beginning,” Trump said, speaking to reporters. He said that Turkish President Erdogan had questioned him about the measures taken against Syria.

“A lot of people have posed that question to me, because they [Syria] have been sanctioned, which has deprived them of the opportunity to start anew. So we want to help them,” Trump said. It has recently been revealed that the HTS government has offered Trump’s business company, The Trump Organization, the opportunity to build a high-end building in Damascus, the capital of Syria, to please Trump. Reports related to this have been published at a time when Trump is scheduled to depart on a trip to three Middle Eastern countries.

The offer to give Trump’s company the opportunity to build a ‘Trump Tower’ in Damascus was made with the intention of securing an opportunity for HTS leaders to meet with him during Trump’s Middle East trip, according to sources familiar with the matter. In addition, sources said that the HTS government has proposed taking other steps to please Trump. This includes beginning to eliminate hostility and strengthen relations with Zionist Israel, as well as giving the United States a stake in Syria’s oil and gas production industry, sources said. Those familiar with the matter said these were proposals made to please Trump and seek relief from the harsh restrictive measures imposed by the United States against Syria.

Attorney General Ahmed Usham has stated that agreements made with companies will be terminated if work is not progressing on islands leased for various purposes. The Attorney General said this while answering a question during the Ministers’ Ask Forum. During the Ask Forum, someone raised a question about Sun Travels company being leased N. Meenawaru and Udhdhoo, and then having the agreement for one island terminated and the agreement for the other island not renewed.

Responding to that question, Attorney General Ahmed Usham said that N. Meenawaru and Udhdhoo were leased based on a specific proposal submitted, with an agreement drawn up for specific work to be carried out. He also said that surveys conducted by the government showed that adequate work as per the agreement was not being carried out on these islands.

Therefore, Usham said that since Udhdhoo was an island leased for 25 years, it was decided not to renew the agreement when the lease period expired. He also said that for Meenawaru, as work was not progressing according to the agreement, all procedures in the agreement were completed, notice was given, and then the agreement was terminated. The Attorney General said that not just these two islands, but there are other islands and lagoons where work is not progressing according to agreements. He added that after reviewing these agreements, agreements for islands and lagoons where work is not progressing will be terminated, and that the work of reviewing agreements is currently ongoing.

“We are working on reclaiming islands that are being misused by the government. Islands have not been leased only for agricultural purposes. There are lagoons and islands leased for tourism purposes. Among these too, there are many places where work is not progressing,” said the Attorney General. N. Meenawaru was leased to Sun Travels on February 6, 2010. The island was leased for agriculture and value-added processing work, or to produce and market value-added products. The government has noted that despite repeated instructions to correct issues that were being carried out in violation of the agreement on that island, they have not been corrected.

In addition, Dh. Udhdhoo was leased for commercial purposes. When the agreement period for that island expired and the island reverted to the government, the government has decided to make it an island for the people of Dh. Atoll to travel to.

The Minister said this while answering a question posed by MP Ibrahim Hussain of Fuvahmulah South constituency in today’s parliament session, regarding whether student loans are being repaid regularly.

The Minister of Higher Education, Vocational Training and Skills Development highlighted that very few students who receive loans are repaying them regularly. He stated that only 40% of students are repaying the loans after completing their studies. The Minister emphasized that this money is owed to the state and said that they will soon decide on measures to recover these funds.

“As of April this year, 157 million rufiyaa has been disbursed as loans. There are significant issues with repayment. They are not being repaid properly and on time,” said Dr. Ali Haidar Ahmed, Minister of Higher Education, Vocational Training and Skills Development. In addition, the President has instructed to adjust the loan amounts of previous borrowers by deducting the administrative fee from the remaining balance to be paid. Last April, a registry was created for Maldivian students studying abroad, in addition to those studying on government scholarships and loans. The Ministry of Higher Education, Vocational Training and Skills Development has revealed that by the end of last December, more than 2,000 students had registered in this database. This includes 915 male students and 1,201 female students.

The Student Loan Scheme for students studying abroad allows students to study in any country of their choice. These loans are provided for studies in fields that are most needed in the Maldives.

In a press release, the Indian High Commission in Maldives stated that at the request of the Maldivian government, they have decided to extend the repayment period for the $50 million Treasury bill obtained by the Maldivian government through the State Bank of India. They also mentioned that this extension was granted without any additional interest.

Acknowledging the budget support assistance provided by the Indian government to Maldives, Foreign Minister Dr. Abdulla Khaleel shared a post on social media expressing gratitude to India’s External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar and the Indian government.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the Indian government provided $50 million in budget support to the Maldivian government by extending the repayment period of the $50 million Treasury bill obtained through SBI for an additional year, starting from May 12, 2025. The ministry highlighted that this generous assistance further demonstrates the long-standing close friendship between the Indian and Maldivian governments.

The Maldivian government acknowledges the generous assistance provided by the Indian government as budget support and specifically notes that this recent aid will provide relief to the ongoing fiscal reform efforts of the Maldivian government. Since March 2019, the Indian government has extended several such Treasury bills through SBI without interest. In addition to postponing the repayment of T-bills, the Indian government has also arranged a currency swap facility to improve Maldives’ reserves.

Among the T-bills sold to SBI, India also postponed the repayment of $50 million that was due last September. That $50 million is now due to be repaid next September.

Hamas releases American hostage coinciding with Trump’s trip

Hamas, the governing group in Gaza, Palestine, has released an American hostage named Abigail Edan Alexander who was under their custody. The Israelis have confirmed that Alexander has been handed over to the Red Cross by Hamas. This is the first time Hamas has released a hostage since the Israelis violated the ceasefire agreement established on January 19 between Hamas and Israel, and resumed attacks on Gaza.

The 21-year-old Alexander, released by Hamas, is a citizen of both the United States and Israel, born in New Jersey, USA. He is associated with the Israeli army, which is carrying out genocide against Muslims in Gaza. Alexander was the only American citizen among the hostages currently held by Hamas. Hamas decided to release Alexander following discussions between the group and the United States, Egypt, and Qatar. Hamas has decided to release an American hostage at a time when US President Donald Trump is set to embark on a trip to some Middle Eastern countries. Hamas says the release is a gesture of cooperation towards Trump. Additionally, Hamas states that this decision is aimed at supporting ongoing discussions to bring a sustainable end to the Israeli army’s genocide and to provide food and humanitarian aid to the 2.3 million people suffering in Gaza.

On May 12, at noon, the Israelis temporarily halted their attacks on Gaza. Israeli terrorist Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the attacks were paused to facilitate the safe transfer of Alexander to the Israelis. Netanyahu has stated that despite releasing the hostage, they will not stop retaliating and will intensify their attacks on Gaza. Israeli National Security Minister Benny Gantz has also said that the war against Hamas cannot be stopped and that no aid supplies should be allowed into Gaza.

Qatar and Egypt have welcomed Hamas’s decision to release Alexander. Both countries have described Hamas’s release of Alexander as an encouragement to proceed with new discussions on stopping the exchange of attacks. Israel has announced that an Israeli delegation will travel to Qatar on May 15 to discuss a new proposal for releasing more hostages. Unable to tolerate the Israeli aggressive attacks, Hamas took 251 251 Israelis as hostages in a jihadi attack on October 7, 2023. Some hostages have been released under a previous agreement between Hamas and Israel. Israel believes that 58 hostages are currently under Hamas’s custody.

Trump Considers Accepting Qatar’s Gift Plane as Air Force One

President Donald Trump’s administration is considering accepting a Boeing 747-8 aircraft gifted by Qatar’s royal family and using it as the official presidential aircraft ‘Air Force One’ for the President’s air travel, according to reports. The high-end aircraft that Qatar is preparing to gift would be the most expensive gift ever received by a U.S. President in American history. This model of aircraft is priced at approximately over $400 million.

Supporting this idea, Trump stated on social media that instead of the current 40-year-old Air Force One, they are about to receive a Boeing aircraft of this model for free. However, this has drawn criticism from Trump’s opponents. Some have characterized this as both a bribe from a foreign state and an attempt by a foreign country to exert influence over the United States.

White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany said that any gift from a foreign government would be accepted in accordance with relevant laws and that the process would be conducted transparently. Qatar government spokesman Ali al-Ansari said in a statement that discussions are ongoing between Qatar and the U.S. Department of Defense regarding the temporary provision of an aircraft for use as Air Force One, but no decision has been finalized yet.

In addition to opposition parties, some civil society organizations have also expressed concerns about accepting such an expensive gift from a foreign country. Trump is scheduled to begin a trip to Middle Eastern countries this week, including a visit to Qatar. However, some media outlets have reported that the aircraft will not be gifted during this trip.
