Trump in the Gulf: Saudi Arabia to invest $600 billion in the United States

Saudi Arabia has announced that it has decided to invest 600 billion US dollars in the United States. This announcement was made during US President Donald Trump’s current visit to Saudi Arabia. Trump is visiting Saudi Arabia as part of a trip to three Gulf countries. In addition to Saudi Arabia, he will also visit Qatar and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). During Trump’s visit, important agreements have been signed to strengthen relations between Saudi Arabia and the United States in various fields. One of the most notable agreements is the one signed by Saudi Arabia to invest 600 billion dollars in the United States. Additionally, an agreement was reached during Trump’s visit to sell $142 million worth of weapons to Saudi Arabia. The White House described this as the most expensive defense agreement made with a foreign country.

Trump has also announced during his trip that he will ease the strict sanctions imposed by the United States against Syria. The sanctions against Syria were imposed by Western powers, including the United States, and Arab countries in connection with the civil war that began in that country 14 years ago. The war ended when the terrorist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) overthrew the government of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in a coup. HTS overthrew Assad’s government on December 8, 2024. Speaking at an investment forum in Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, Trump said he decided to lift the sanctions imposed by the United States against Syria at the request of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. He said that the results of the sanctions against Syria were good, and now it was time to lift those measures.

Azad Hassan al-Shaibani, the Foreign Minister of the HTS government, welcomed Trump’s announcement to lift the sanctions against Syria. The United States designated Syria as a state sponsor of terrorism against its own people in 1979. And sanctions against that country were imposed in 2004. Subsequently, in 2011, the United States further tightened those measures.

The president of the HTS government ruling Syria is Ahmed al-Shara, the leader of that group. The White House said that Trump has decided to hold a brief meeting with Shara during his trip to Saudi Arabia. Shara’s government has made many proposals to Trump in order to secure such a meeting opportunity. Among some of the things Shara has proposed to please Trump is offering Trump’s business company, ‘The Trump Organization,’ the opportunity to build a high-end building in the capital Damascus.

While many agreements have been signed between Trump and Crown Prince Mohammed during their meetings, they include agreements related to energy, defense, and the mining industry. The White House said that defense agreements include agreements on providing air defense systems and missile defense systems, strengthening relations between air forces and air agencies, as well as agreements related to maritime security and communications. The Saudi Crown Prince said that with further agreements being signed along with ongoing discussions, the total value of agreements signed between the two countries will reach one trillion US dollars.

The Volleyball Association of Maldives (VAM) has begun the process of finding a new coach to prepare the national under-23 volleyball team for the Indian Ocean Island Games (IOIG). VAM President Mohamed Latheef said that following the departure of the previous coach, Ali Pour Arouji, who was brought in to prepare the men’s under-23 team for the IOIG, they are now working to find another international coach. He mentioned that they have already interviewed an Iranian coach.

Latheef stated that they have shared information about the available resources in the Maldives with the Iranian coach they interviewed, and they are hopeful that the matter will be settled soon. He added that they are working to bring a new coach to the Maldives the Maldives within the next 30 days. VAM is once again bringing in an experienced Iranian coach with a license from FIVB, the main governing body of volleyball. The coach is a former player with extensive experience in the Iranian national team and is also a coach with significant regional volleyball experience.

Latheef noted that the previous Iranian coach left the Maldives due to the lack of indoor courts for the required training and the absence of necessary resources. He mentioned that they have informed the newly interviewed coach that 80% of the training sessions would have to be held outdoors due to the difficulties in accessing indoor halls. The previous coach left because of the lack of training facilities and an environment to conduct necessary team drills, Latheef explained.

Latheef highlighted that the Ministry of Sports is cooperating in finding a new coach for the national under-23 volleyball team and in arranging a place for training sessions.

He also mentioned that the government is working to address the resource constraints and expressed full confidence in the current administration’s commitment to allocating dedicated spaces for volleyball.

Azmiraaldha and Mahaz dismissed from the position of Supreme Court Justice

Justice Dr. Azmiraaldha Zahir and Mahaz Ali Zahir have been dismissed from their positions as Supreme Court Justices. The judges were dismissed by a vote taken in today’s People’s Majlis session. In separate votes, 68 members voted to dismiss both judges. After the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) sent the matter of dismissing two Supreme Court judges to the People’s Majlis, the Judiciary Committee of the Majlis studied the matter and decided that there were no procedural issues in dismissing the two judges. The Constitution states that a judge can be removed from office if the Judicial Service Commission believes that the person is not qualified for the position of judge, or that the judge has committed an act unbecoming of the position, and submits the matter to the People’s Majlis, where it passes with a two-thirds majority of the members present and voting at a session of the Majlis.

The dismissal of Dr. Azmiraaldha Zahir and Ustaz Mahaz Ali Zahir from their positions as Supreme Court Justices was passed by more than two-thirds of the members present at the Majlis session in separate votes. As such, 68 members voted to dismiss the two judges, while 11 members voted against. The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) sent the matter to the People’s Majlis to dismiss Justice Azmiraaldha and Justice Mahaz after determining that they were guilty of misconduct in a case where they were accused of influencing lower court judges to release Dr. Ismail Lateef, Azmiraaldha’s husband, from detention.

The JSC report states that it has been proven that Supreme Court Justice Dr. Azmiraaldha Zahir and Justice Mahaz Ali Zahir, through Criminal Court Judge Saffath Habeeb, influenced Judge Ibrahim Zihunee, who made the decision regarding detention in the case of Dr. Ismail Lateef, who was taken into police custody on April 04, 2025, when he was brought to the Criminal Court to decide on his detention.

Therefore, as the actions of Dr. Azmiraaldha Zahir and Mahaz are contrary to the Constitution, the Judges Act of the Maldives, and the Judges’ Code of Conduct, the JSC has requested to decide on their judgeships under the JSC Act. After studying the case, many members of the Majlis supported the Judiciary Committee’s decision to dismiss the two judges. Members have stated that it has been proven that the two judges influenced the lower court judges.

While speaking on the matter of dismissing the judges, members also shared statistics on decisions made by the JSC regarding cases related to judges. Members also stated that the judiciary was most influenced during the previous MDP administration.

According to statistics, from November 2018 to 2023, 56 actions were taken against judges. This includes dismissing 8 judges, demoting 3 judges, and suspending 12 judges. The number of judges who were reprimanded after being found guilty of misconduct reached 33. However, in this government, only 5 actions have been taken against judges so far. This includes suspending 3 judges and 2 cases of examining judges’ misconduct and reprimanding them, as stated by the members.

No need to frame Shamaan, Ihsan’s video story not important for investigation: Police

The police have also denied the claims made by the family that the former Controller of Immigration, Shamaan Waheed, was arrested through framing. He was dismissed from his position and arrested on the night of March 21. Shamaan’s family has been claiming that he has been “unjustly arrested and detained for many days” and suspecting that he has been framed. The family also stated in a released statement that Home Minister Ali Ihsan started working to detain Shamaan because of Ihsan’s “video”. However, they did not provide details of these allegations.

At a press conference held today regarding the Immigration bribery case, a journalist asked about these allegations made by his family. Responding to the question, Assistant Commissioner of Police Abdullah Shareef said that the investigation so far shows that there is no need to do anything to frame anyone in this case. “So even though the family has talked about issues between the Minister [Ali Ihsan] and Shamaan, I have not received any information about anything that has been noted in this investigation so far,” Shareef said.

“And regarding any video of anyone related to this case, that is not very important for this investigation, so we are not pursuing that aspect in this investigation.” He also said that Ihsan has not been questioned about the video issue so far. The police suspect that after releasing a foreigner who was taken into Immigration custody, in collaboration with some employees of that department, more than 500,000 rufiyaa was obtained from that person and the money was taken to Shamaan’s house. In that case, Shamaan and four other Immigration employees, as well as a foreigner, have been arrested. The case has now been sent to the Prosecutor General’s Office for prosecution.”

In a statement released by the police regarding this case, it was mentioned that the investigation revealed that on March 12, Immigration conducted an operation targeting foreigners staying in a house in Maafannu, which was carried out with Shamaan’s knowledge, in violation of rules and regulations. The statement also said that one of the foreigners taken into Immigration custody that night was released under Shamaan’s instructions as an “urgent” matter, and after the release, another Immigration officer took money from the foreigner and brought it to Shamaan’s house.

The police also stated that when Shamaan’s house was searched under a court order, 257,475 rufiyaa, 10,000 US dollars, and currency from some other countries were found. Shamaan was dismissed from his position when this case came to light.

Case sent for prosecution against a foreigner for illegal business operations and money laundering

A Bangladeshi national has been arrested, investigated, and referred to the Prosecutor General’s Office for prosecution on charges of illegally bringing foreigners into the country in collaboration with Immigration staff, obtaining money through criminal activities, and money laundering. Police investigations have revealed that several million rufiyaa have been circulated through bank accounts created under the name of 34-year-old Shahadat Hussain.

Following intelligence received by the police about illegal business operations bringing foreigners into the country, obtaining money through criminal activities, and money laundering, the 34-year-old Bangladeshi national Shahadat Hussain was arrested and investigated. Shahadat Hussain, who was arrested under a court order and investigated, has been living in the Maldives since 2014. He has worked in the Maldives under four work permits, and since 2019, he has opened three Maldivian rufiyaa accounts and three US dollar accounts at the Bank of Maldives under his name. Police say his work permit expired in July of last year.

Some of the findings from the police investigation show that although his most recent employment document listed him as an office worker, his salary was stated as 3000 dollars. Police say this information was also entered in the same way in the Expat system. The police investigation has revealed that he was extensively involved in the business of bringing foreigners into the country. He was living in a two-bedroom apartment in Male’ for 18,000 rufiyaa, and police have found logos of companies, company registrations, foreigners’ passports, and some Maldivians’ eFaas IDs from his phone and laptop.

“The discovery of these items indicates that Shahadat Hussain is someone who brings foreigners into the country on a large scale and derives financial benefits from it. Based on the information found on his phone and laptop, there were 153 account IDs with passwords for individuals, 7 foreign account IDs with passwords, 283 IDs with passwords for private limited companies, 126 individual names, and 5 IDs under partnership names,” said Chief Inspector of Police Ahmed Azmath Abdullah.

Police said that while numerous documents and IDs were found in his possession, these are not believed to be items he created himself. They also believe that some institutions and private individuals are involved in this and are receiving financial benefits. “It is believed that in Shahadat Hussain’s operation, some employees of Maldives Immigration and many ordinary Maldivians work with Shahadat Hussain to obtain company quotas, bring in foreigners, release them into Male’ without providing employment, and derive financial benefits. Additionally, it has been found that he sends fraudulent work permit documents via phone and has money deposited into accounts opened in Bangladesh,” said Chief Inspector of Police Ahmed Azmath Abdullah.

Police say that the involvement of Maldivian and Immigration staff in this case is evident from the documents and chat logs found on his phone, and this is being investigated as a separate case. In Shahadat’s accounts, who was running an extensive business of bringing foreigners, 8 million rufiyaa has been circulated. Police investigations have also revealed that he paid more than a million rufiyaa to the Expat system from his personal account. Police say they are continuing to investigate this case further.”

Bill passed to introduce generational ban to control tobacco

The People’s Majlis has passed an amendment to the Tobacco Control Act to prohibit the use of tobacco products for people born after a certain year. The amendment to the Tobacco Control Act was submitted on behalf of the government by Ali Ashrag, Member of Parliament for Kinbidhoo constituency. A temporary committee of 7 members selected from among the members has made minor amendments to the bill. The bill was passed by the Majlis as approved by the committee with the votes of 63 out of 65 members who participated in the voting.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu decided to introduce a “generational ban” to stop tobacco use in the Maldives. As such, he has decided to ban tobacco use for children born from 2007 onwards. According to the amendment submitted by the government to the Tobacco Control Act, once this bill becomes law, no person born on or after January 1, 2007 shall use tobacco products. It is also prohibited to sell tobacco products to anyone of that age.

The amendment also includes responsibilities of tobacco product sellers on behalf of the government. Accordingly, tobacco products can only be sold in licensed and registered places. The amendment also states that tobacco products should not be sold online or through vending machines or other means where the buyer’s identity is unknown. The amendment also prohibits the import of machinery specifically designed for manufacturing tobacco products into the Maldives. It also prohibits the possession and use of electronic cigarettes and vaping devices and products prepared for use with them.

In addition, under this amendment, police will have the power to confiscate electronic cigarettes and vaping products if found in possession or use. Customs and police will also have the power to confiscate such items imported into the country. While the government has decided to introduce a generational ban to control tobacco, there will be a 6-month period to implement the bill after it is passed. As such, it has been decided that the law will come into effect from November 1 following the passing of the bill.

Half a million people in Gaza face starvation due to Israeli blockade

The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), an international agency that monitors food security conditions, has revealed that nearly half a million people out of Gaza’s 2.3 million population are facing hunger. In a report released by the agency, it stated that if access to food and humanitarian aid continues to be obstructed for Gaza’s residents, within the next four months, about half a million people in the enclave will face extreme difficulty in obtaining enough food to survive. This could lead to widespread hunger and a high risk of mass starvation deaths.

The Israeli military is obstructing the entry of food and humanitarian aid into Gaza, with food and humanitarian aid into Gaza, with the full support and cooperation of US President Donald Trump. On March 2, the Israeli forces occupying Gaza tightened the blockade and halted the entry of food and humanitarian supplies. Additionally, they have blocked the import of medical supplies and equipment, as well as fuel needed to run power plants and generators.

The IPC, which monitors Gaza’s food security situation, said that the condition of Gaza’s residents has worsened since last October. The Israeli blockade has created additional obstacles for the enclave’s residents in obtaining sufficient food for survival. The agency made this statement at a time when other international organizations are also revealing the increased suffering of Gaza’s people.

2.1 million at risk of hunger

The IPC stated that within the next four months, about 2.1 million people in Gaza’s population will face difficulties in obtaining food. Furthermore, over 469,500 people will have no access to food at all and will face starvation. The international community has been stating that deliberately starving Gaza’s residents is a tactic of war used by Israeli forces and constitutes a war crime under international humanitarian law.

In an effort to further impoverish Gaza’s residents, Zionist extremist Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is working to bring the distribution of food and humanitarian aid under Israeli military control. This is part of a plan devised with Trump’s approval. The aim is to starve and kill as many Gaza residents as possible.

The Israeli proposal involves forcibly relocating all residents living in northern Gaza to six large camps or prisons to be established in the south of the enclave. They plan to set up four aid distribution centers in that area and bring all aid distribution work under Israeli military supervision. The security of these facilities is to be assigned to two American companies. Under the Israeli plan, only one person per family will be allowed to go to the aid distribution centers.

UN and international community oppose Israeli plan

The IPC said the Israeli plan is not feasible. Under this proposal, “Gaza’s residents will not receive the food, water, shelter and medicine they desperately need,” the agency said. “The new proposed aid distribution system will close off all avenues for some Gaza residents to obtain food. Immediate steps need to be taken to prevent more [starvation] deaths and save people from malnutrition and starvation,” the agency stated.

The criteria for determining if a land or country’s population is facing starvation include 20% of people not having access to enough food for survival. It also includes one in three children in the population suffering from malnutrition. Additionally, two out of every 10,000 deaths should be due to starvation from lack of food.

The IPC report states that between April 2025 and March 2026, 71,000 children in Gaza will face malnutrition due to lack of nutritious food. Of these, about 41,100 children’s condition will become serious. This is expected to affect children between six months and five years of age, the IPC warned. The agency’s report was compiled with the assistance of relevant United Nations agencies and civil society organizations.

Trump’s first stop on Gulf tour is Saudi Arabia

U.S. President Donald Trump has arrived in Saudi Arabia as part of an official tour to wealthy Gulf countries. The purpose of Trump’s trip to Gulf countries is to seek business and investment opportunities from Arab nations. It is not expected that he will pay much attention to the security challenges facing the Middle East during this trip. Trump hopes to secure investments worth trillions of U.S. dollars from Gulf countries during the tour.

After Saudi Arabia, Trump is scheduled to visit Qatar next. That will be on May 14th. Then he will travel to the United Arab Emirates. That will also be on May 14th. Trump’s Gulf tour does not include a visit to Israel, where Palestinians in Gaza are facing genocide. As such, analysts studying the region continue to raise questions about the importance the U.S., Israel’s biggest supporter, gives to that country.

Speaking at the Saudi-US Investment Forum being held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia’s Investment Minister Khalid Al-Falih said that the closest relationship between Saudi Arabia and the U.S. is in the energy sector. He said that business and investment opportunities in Saudi Arabia have now multiplied many times over. He stated that the results of Saudi Arabia and the U.S. working together are very successful.

Meeting with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Trump said that the Crown Prince is his friend and that they have a close relationship. Recalling his trip to Saudi Arabia in 2017, Trump said that if Saudi Arabia invests in the U.S., it would be a great help in creating job opportunities in America. In a joking tone, Trump said that while Saudi Arabia had previously said it would invest $600 billion in the U.S., this amount could even be increased to one trillion U.S. dollars. Trump further stated that both Saudi Arabia and the U.S. like each other very much.
