Preparations underway to complete Kunburudhoo football field

The Road Development Corporation (RDC) has announced that the materials needed for the development project of the Kunburudhoo football field in South Ari Atoll have been sent to the island. In a post on X, RDC stated that materials needed to expand the Kunburudhoo football field and complete unfinished work have been sent to the island, and the process of unloading these items is currently underway. At the end of March, the government assigned three companies to complete 77 sports projects. Of these, RDC was tasked with 23 projects. These works include the construction and renovation of sports fields, outdoor gyms, and fitness and recreation centers.

Highlighting the unfinished work on the island’s football field, Azmi said that the remaining tasks include leveling the sub-base of the field, laying the turf, and painting.

Noting that the Kunburudhoo field project is a long-delayed work, Azmi said that the field has been in this condition for about ten years. He expressed concern that the island’s youth have been unable to use the field due to this situation. In line with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s pledge to complete unfinished sports projects within two years, Azmi said that RDC has stated the Kunburudhoo field work will be completed in approximately three to four weeks. Azmi described this as a long-standing hope for the youth and characterized it as progress for young people.

“In reality, this is a big hope for the youth. The island’s youth have been without a place to play football for about ten years,” Azmi told PSM News. While the government has assigned three companies to work on 77 sports-related projects, it is estimated that these works will cost 204.5 million rufiyaa.

Minister Rafiu: A short tournament is being held due to the SAFF Championship

Minister of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment Abdullah Rafiu has said that efforts are being made to hold a short tournament in preparation for the upcoming SAFF Championship, as the football season has been postponed to next August. The minister said this in response to clubs halting their training sessions after the football season in the Maldives was delayed to August on FIFA’s instructions. In a special interview with PSM News, Rafiu said that work is underway to provide an opportunity to play matches by organizing an additional tournament.

Referring to the postponement of the season to August, the minister said that although it was postponed in accordance with FIFA’s instructions, the Sports Ministry is making necessary preparations to hold a short tournament in consultation with the Normalization Committee. “Whether it’s the President’s Cup or any other tournament, I consider it very important to play a tournament,” the minister said. The minister has highlighted the importance of football continuing without interruption. Rafiu said that clubs now have adequate time to prepare for the season as it is set to begin in August. The Football Association of Maldives (FAM) has invited clubs to participate in a football tournament in the Maldives before the SAFF Championship. It is not mandatory for any club to play in this tournament. The tournament will be played among the teams that wish to participate.

It has been one and a half years since a national-level football tournament was played in the Maldives. The last official tournament was held in November 2023. Since then, the season has been delayed due to issues with FAM elections, and three dates have been given to start this year’s season. The season, which was last scheduled to start on the 10th of this month, was postponed when FIFA and AFC advised to delay the season and start it next August. As a result, many clubs have stopped their practice sessions. The government has also provided financial assistance to clubs to prepare for the new football season.

Loan secured for 5,000 flats to be built by FDC

A loan has been secured for 5,000 housing units out of the flats that FDC has decided to build. The company’s Managing Director, Hamdhaan Shakeel, said that out of the 15,000 flats to be built in the Male’ area, loans have been secured from a Chinese bank for 5,000 flats so far. He said that the bank has shared a financial sheet including the loan amount, interest rate, and repayment period, and that this information has been submitted to the Ministry of Construction.

According to him, the Ministry will submit the report to the Economic Council in the coming few weeks. Hamdhaan said that once the Economic Council makes a decision regarding the loan, the agreement will be signed and the project will be launched. Hamdhaan stated that they are also seeking loans for additional housing units. He said that the details of these will also be available soon.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu announced last November that construction of more than 27,000 housing units will begin this year in Male’ and other islands. He said that out of these, 15,000 will be built in the Male’ area. FDC is currently building 4,000 flats in Hulhumale’. Out of the project entrusted to two Indian companies, 700 housing units have been completed and handed over.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has said that the commencement of practical work on the Debt Sustainability Support Service (DSSS) will open a new chapter of sustainable development, providing solutions to the problems faced by small island developing states like the Maldives. The President said this while speaking as the Co-Chair at a meeting of the Strategic Action Group (SAG), established to coordinate the work of Small Island Developing States (SIDS).

In his speech, the President noted that many SIDS countries are facing or at risk of facing major financial challenges, in addition to the threat of climate change. Therefore, he said that ensuring sustainable debt management and resilient development is a sensitive issue for such countries. Hence, he emphasized the importance of starting DSSS work without delay. The President said that the Maldives proposed a “Debt-relief-for-resilience-building mechanism” to prioritize countries that invest in resilience through debt relief. He said that implementing such a mechanism aims to assess the vulnerable situation of each country and based on that, implement projects that would establish financial self-sufficiency in such countries. The President also said that such a mechanism aims to link debt relief with resilience goals and establish financial capacity to invest in sustainable development. The President said that the practical work of a facility like DSSS would open a new chapter of sustainable development, finding solutions to the problems faced by small island developing states.

In his speech, the President described the upcoming Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development (FFD-4) as a golden opportunity for global acceptance of DSSS. Although many countries have already approved this work, he said that international cooperation and participation are important to strengthen innovative debt mechanisms and concessional finance efforts. Concluding his speech, the President said that sustainable debt management is not just about statistics, but also about protecting lives, livelihoods, and securing the future.

Small Island Developing States (SIDS) is an association consisting of 38 United Nations member states and 20 non-UN members or associate members. The Maldives and Antigua and Barbuda are the co-chairs of the SIDS SAG.

A skill exchange program is being held between Liverpool and Maldives

Minister of Sports and Fitness Abdullah Rafiu has said that a skill exchange program is set to be held between the English club Liverpool and the Maldives. The Maldives was designated as Liverpool’s “Official Tourist Destination Partner” under a campaign lasting three years and six months, aimed at increasing the reach of the Maldives tourism brand and encouraging more tourists to visit the Maldives. The campaign will also include activities such as establishing a Liverpool academy in the Maldives, strengthening sports tourism, and enhancing destination branding.

In a special interview with PSM News, the Minister said that starting something in a good way is something that will open doors in many ways. He has also said that many people knowing about this in various ways is a path that will open up for football as well as other sports. In addition, the Minister has noted that this is a way for Maldivian football to be promoted in the international arena. “We have paved the way to establish training facilities. Along with that, we are set to carry out a talent exchange program between the Maldives and Liverpool,” Rafiu said.

Fish exports from Maldives increased by 35.1% in the first 2 months

The volume of fish exports from the Maldives has increased in the first two months of this year. According to the Monthly Statistics Report of the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA), the volume of fish exports from the Maldives has increased compared to the first two months of last year. According to the MMA report, the amount of fish exported from the Maldives in the first two months of this year has increased by 35.1% compared to the first two months of last year.

In the first two months of this year, 14,222 metric tons of fish were exported from the Maldives. The MMA report shows that 10,526 metric tons of fish were exported during this period last year. Exports of all major types of fish have increased this year. Accordingly, 12,971 metric tons of frozen skipjack tuna have been exported. During this period last year, this figure stood at 8,903 metric tons. This is a 45% increase.

In the first two months of this year, 10,402 metric tons of skipjack tuna have been exported. During this period last year, 6,466 metric tons of fish were exported. 2,468 metric tons of yellowfin tuna have been exported. During this period last year, 2,420 metric tons of fish were exported. Looking at other varieties, 100 metric tons of fish have been exported this year. Statistics show that 16 metric tons of this variety were exported last year.

Although all types of fish exported from the Maldives have increased, the amount of canned fish exported has decreased. In the first two months of this year, 750 metric tons of fish were exported from the Maldives. However, during this period last year, this figure was at 1,306 metric tons. Therefore, this is a 42% decrease. The Maldives fisheries have improved significantly in recent days. And the amount of fish unloaded by fishing boats to MIFCO has also increased. The world’s highest quality competitions will be held in the swimming pool

The new international swimming pool established by the Swimming Association of Maldives will become a venue for world-class swimming competitions, said Minister of Sports and Fitness Abdullah Rafiu. He said this in a special interview with “PSM News” after inspecting the progress of the new swimming pool work. Referring to how the work began, the minister said that within the first week of taking office, he consulted with various agencies to start the work.

“This included discussions with HDC, and the site was previously occupied by heavy vehicles of a company that was here before. After that, the site was completely cleared and handed over to the party now doing the work,” Rafiu said. The minister has said that the progress of this work to this point is a very big advancement. He has also said that looking at the past year, the work is now progressing rapidly, and a large part of the pool will be completed soon without much delay. “The materials needed to lay the pool have now been brought to the site. God willing, the base will also be laid in the pool building within this week,” Rafiu said.

This is a swimming pool being designed to accommodate 1,500 people at once. As the place is being designed with the facilities needed for swimming training, it will also include a high jump facility.

Call for Action to End Israel’s Brutality
