Russian troops have made further advances into additional territories in eastern Ukraine. Russian forces are making progress in areas where they have already established control in Ukraine, at a time when final preparations are underway for an important meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump. The Putin-Trump meeting is scheduled to take place on August 15 in Alaska, USA. The main goal of this meeting is to identify a path to end the Russia-Ukraine war and to begin work on formulating an agreement to that effect. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has not been invited to participate in the Alaska meeting because Putin has refused to meet with him.
Ukraine and its Western allies believe that the Putin-Trump meeting may result in Ukraine being forced to cede some of its territory to Russia. However, they continue to state that this would be unacceptable. Trump has previously suggested that there is a possibility of territorial exchanges between the two countries as part of an agreement to end the war. Russian forces, which have taken control of one-fifth of Ukraine’s territory, are currently making advances in the eastern regions of Ukraine. Russian soldiers are active near Dobropillia, a coal-rich town in the Donetsk region, which is a key area in Donbas, and are working to bring it under their control.
As final preparations are being made for the important meeting between Putin and Trump, the last time these two leaders met was in 2021. Sources from the Trump administration say that the chances of making significant progress in ending the war during the Alaska meeting are slim. However, these sources state that both parties will listen to the other’s proposals during the meeting. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that Trump will work to understand Putin’s mindset at the Alaska summit.
