The Attorney General has affirmed that the government’s actions regarding the constitutional amendment to synchronize presidential and parliamentary elections are being carried out in strict adherence to legal principles. The primary objective of this amendment is to hold both elections simultaneously and to adjust the commencement date of the parliamentary term.
Under the Constitution, such significant changes can only be enacted following approval through a public referendum. Consequently, the referendum is scheduled to take place on the 4th of next month. Should the citizens vote against these changes, the President will not assent to the bill. The Attorney General’s Office has further assured that the referendum question and all related procedural matters are being conducted in full compliance with the Constitution.
