Barcelona has decided to acquire forward Marcus Rashford, who was deemed surplus to requirements at Manchester United. According to Spanish media reports, United has agreed to Barcelona’s proposal to sign Rashford. Rashford will be joining Barcelona on a loan agreement. However, if he performs well, Barcelona has made arrangements to potentially purchase the player. The 27-year-old Rashford is being brought to Barcelona after the club’s efforts to find a left-wing player were unsuccessful. Initially, Barcelona tried to acquire Nico Williams from Spain’s Athletic Bilbao. However, after he signed a long-term contract, they then looked into buying Liverpool’s Colombian forward Luis Diaz. But Liverpool has decided not to sell the player.
Rashford played for Aston Villa in the latter part of the previous season. When he had to return to United, he had significant issues with coach Ruben Amorim. Rashford was loaned to Aston Villa due to problems with the coach, which led United to release him. Aston Villa had the opportunity to make Rashford’s move permanent. However, Rashford didn’t display the level of performance that would justify a £40 million permanent contract. He only managed to score two goals in 10 matches. Rashford has scored 87 goals for United in 287 matches over 10 years.
Barcelona initially hesitated to sign Rashford due to his high salary and the expense of playing him compared to his recent performances. Rashford still has three years remaining on his contract with Manchester United. According to this contract, he is to be paid over £300,000 per week in salary. However, Barcelona will significantly reduce this amount.
