Participants in the second round of trilateral discussions, led by the United States to mediate an end to the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine since 2022, have described the progress of the talks as positive and encouraging.

The first day of the two-day summit, currently being held in Abu Dhabi, has concluded. Reflecting on the initial discussions, Rustem Umerov, the head of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council and lead negotiator, stated that the talks were substantive, focusing extensively on potential measures to resolve the conflict.

A U.S. official also characterized the meeting as productive and constructive, highlighting the meaningful dialogue between the parties.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized that reaching a genuine peace through these negotiations is of paramount importance. He cautioned that these talks must not provide Russia with any opportunity to prolong its military operations. Furthermore, he called upon Ukraine’s allies to intensify their efforts in exerting pressure on Russia.

President Zelenskyy further remarked that the current trajectory of the negotiations should instill a sense of hope among the Ukrainian people, moving closer toward a ceasefire and the establishment of lasting peace. He stressed that the situation should not be perceived as an opportunity for Russia to exploit circumstances for military advantage. Additionally, he expressed optimism that the talks would soon facilitate a new round of prisoner exchanges between the two nations.

Regarding the human cost of the conflict, President Zelenskyy estimated that the number of Ukrainian soldiers killed in action has now reached approximately 55,000. This follows a previous statement made in February 2025, where he had placed the military death toll at 46,000.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio noted that, after a significant period, military technical teams from both Russia and Ukraine are once again engaging directly. He underscored the importance of maintaining such communication channels between the two sides.

In response, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that Russia remains committed to its military operations until Ukraine reaches a decision that effectively concludes the conflict.
