Ahmed Thoriq (Tom), Member of Parliament for Mahibadhoo constituency, has been elected as the President of the Football Association of Maldives (FAM). Thoriq was elected as the new President unanimously by all clubs at the FAM Extra Ordinary Congress held today. The executive committee proposed by him was also unanimously approved today. In the election held today under the constitution passed on June 26, there were no candidates to compete against Thoriq. He submitted his nomination form with the support of all 23 clubs eligible to vote.
The executive committee proposed by Thoriq includes three vice presidents. They are Mujtaba Jaleel from Vememco, representing New Radiant; Ali Ibrahim, Member of Parliament and Vice Chairman of New Radiant; and Hussain Shafiu (Kokkey) from Maziya, who previously served as FAM Vice President. The committee also includes Ahmed Abbas from TC, Ali Rizwan from BG, Abdullah Nasih from Odi Sports Club, former national goalkeeper Imran Mohamed, and Mohamed Umair, who played for the national team. Hawwa Nasra Saeed and Hawwa Rashida are included as female members.
As the term of the Normalization Committee comes to an end this month, this new election was held after two years under the supervision of the Normalization Committee, which FIFA appointed after suspending former President Bassam Adil Jaleel and handing over the administration to the committee last year.
