President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu said that the passing of famous football coach Ihsan Abdul Ghani (Santi), who has rendered services to the Maldives in the field of sports, especially in football, at both international and national levels, is a great sorrow and void for the Maldivian sports sector.
The President has extended his condolences to all those in the sports sector and to the deceased’s beloved family in this moment of grief.
Coach Ihsan Abdul Ghani (Santi), who rendered many services to Maldivian football, passed away at Tree Top Hospital while undergoing treatment for cancer late last night. He was a former football player. More significantly, his service was in the field of coaching. Especially in starting and carrying forward the FAM’s Youth Development Program, his role was very significant. Santi is most notably remembered by many for the national football team. He was the assistant coach of the national team that won the first football trophy for the Maldives. He played a very comprehensive role in helping the Maldives win the SAFF Championship football tournament held in the Maldives and Sri Lanka in 2008.
He first joined the national team in 2001. After working as an assistant coach until 2008, he was then seen as a senior coach in club football. In this capacity, he coached Club Eagles and United Victory, and he led Eagles to win the National Football Tournament as well. Santi, who also served as the Technical Director of the Football Association of Maldives, has received the National Youth Award in the field of service to sports.
He was someone who provided great assistance to PSM’s sports programs and offered technical support in many ways. Our prayer is for Allah to grant eternal paradise to Santi’s soul and patience to his family.
