President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has stated that the postal service has provided valuable services that will endure for ages in the development and economy of the Maldives. In a social media post on the occasion of the 119th anniversary of Maldives Post Limited, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu said that the nation is proud of the leaders and employees who have been at the forefront of providing postal services in the country over the past 119 years. He expressed gratitude and best wishes to those who served throughout the long history of the postal service.

The President said that along with postal services, enduring and valuable services have been provided through the post in the country’s progress, achievements in the communication sector, and economic advancement.

The first post office in the Maldives was opened on September 9, 1906. The main reason for opening a post office was the then Maldivian government’s realization of the importance of having a communication system between the Maldives and Sri Lanka. The post office initially used 25-cent stamps from Ceylon with “Maldives” printed on them. The post office first used a Maldivian stamp in 1909. Agency post offices were established in all islands of the Maldives in 1994. With these offices, the delivery of postal services to the atolls became faster.

As postal services expanded and the number of service providers increased, the government started postal services as Maldives Post Limited, a 100% government-owned company.
