President Inaugurates National Defence Force Air Station

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has inaugurated the first Air Station of the Maldives National Defence Force. Named Gan Air Station, this air base was inaugurated during the President’s tour of the islands in Addu Atoll. The President issued a decree on November 3rd, National Victory Day, establishing the first Air Station of the MNDF Air Corps and commencing its operations. This decree orders the Maldivian military to protect and maintain the Maldivian airspace and the Exclusive Economic Zone to safeguard the religion, independence, and sovereign power of the Maldivian state.

Additionally, the decree commands the military to conduct operations using air resources within Maldivian territory and to defend and monitor Maldivian airspace continuously, twenty-four hours a day. The decree also directs the military to establish and operate the first Air Station of the MNDF Air Corps to fulfill their responsibilities and duties in a sustainable manner. After the inauguration ceremony, the President toured the facility.

President Muizzu established the MNDF Air Corps through a presidential decree on March 15, 2024. The Maldivian military’s air force was inaugurated along with the introduction of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle services at a ceremony held at Maafaru International Airport by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, who is also the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces. With this service, all necessary aerial military operations to maintain the safety and security of the Maldivian airspace have commenced. The newly opened Air Station will significantly enhance the country’s capability to monitor its maritime and airspace territories.
