President Fulfills Pledge: Addu Shangri-La Resort Reopens!

In fulfillment of a key presidential pledge made by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, the Shangri-La Villingili Resort & Spa in Addu City has officially reopened today following extensive renovations. The resort, which shuttered its operations in August 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, remained closed despite previous government efforts to bring it back into operation.

Reopening this resort was a cornerstone of President Muizzu’s 2023 presidential campaign, specifically aimed at the residents of Addu City. Following successful negotiations with Shangri-La’s management, it was announced last September that the resort would resume operations before the end of the year. The Ministry of Tourism has confirmed the reopening, noting that the resort has already welcomed its first guests.

Since its closure, various discussions were held regarding its reopening, including an agreement by the previous administration to relinquish the government’s 30 percent stake in the venture. Located just five minutes away from Gan International Airport, Shangri-La first opened in 2008 and quickly established itself as a premier destination for luxury travelers. During its years of operation, the resort played a pivotal role in the economy of Addu, attracting numerous private jets and high-end tourism to the region. Preparations for the relaunch included a recruitment drive that began in early November, during which President Muizzu personally visited the site to oversee the final stages of the project.

The Ministry of Tourism highlighted that the reopening of Shangri-La marks a significant milestone for the economy of Addu City. This development is expected to create numerous employment opportunities for the local community and breathe new life into the regional tourism sector. Prior to its closure, the resort employed over 500 staff members.
