President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has congratulated the Maldives national futsal team on their historic achievement of securing the championship title at the SAFF Futsal Championship 2026. Highlighting the team’s undefeated run throughout the tournament, the President remarked that winning such a prestigious international competition is a momentous historical feat and a testament to the exemplary national spirit displayed by the players.
The Maldives clinched the championship following a 3-1 victory against Bhutan. Despite Bhutan taking an early lead, the Maldivian side staged an impressive comeback, scoring three consecutive goals. These crucial goals were netted by Abdulla Junaid, Ahmed Hammeed, and Captain Mohamed Imran.
With one match still remaining, the Maldives secured the title by winning all five of their played matches, earning a total of 15 points. This lead ensures that even if second-placed Pakistan wins their final match, they cannot surpass the Maldives in the standings. This victory marks the first international gold medal for the Maldives in the field of futsal.
