President Dr. Muizzu Extends Condolences to Fathah’s Family

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has expressed his deepest condolences following the passing of Abdul Fathah, a veteran director who contributed significantly to the Maldivian entertainment industry.

In a message shared on social media, the President conveyed his sympathies to the family of Abdul Fathah Abdul Qayyoom, a celebrated artist and recipient of the National Award for Recognition in the field of film directing. The President prayed for the deceased to be granted eternal peace in Jannah and for Allah (SWT) to bestow His mercy and blessings upon him.

Fathah passed away unexpectedly yesterday afternoon following a sudden heart attack. It is reported that although initial efforts were made to transport him to Kulhudhuffushi for medical attention, he was diverted to Dhidhdhoo as it was the closest accessible island. Reports indicate that he passed away at sea while in transit to Dhidhdhoo.

His funeral prayer was held early this morning at the Dhidhdhoo Islamic Centre.

According to a local source, Fathah had spent the day in Dhidhdhoo with friends and had shown no prior signs of illness or medical complications.

Abdul Fathah was one of the Maldives’ most prominent directors. He was also a talented artist who collaborated on numerous productions with Public Service Media (PSM).

Fathah passed away at the age of 54. Throughout his illustrious career, he received several prestigious accolades, including the National Award of Encouragement in 2004. In 2007, he won the awards for Best Editing and Best Director at the Miadhu Crystal Awards. He also secured wins for Best Screenplay, Best Art Direction, and Best Makeup at the 4th National Film Awards.

Furthermore, Fathah was honored with the Best Video Song award at the 2010 Maldives Video Music Awards. His success continued at the National Film Awards, where he won Best Director, Best Editing, and Best Choreography in 2012, followed by awards for Best Director, Best Editing, Best Art Direction, and Best Choreography in 2015.

In the final chapter of his professional journey, Fathah received the awards for Best Director and Best Art Direction for his last film, “Hahdhu,” at the 9th National Film Awards held in 2019.
