President Departs for China to Attend Shanghai Cooperation Organization Summit

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has departed for China on an official visit to participate in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit, following an invitation from Chinese President Xi Jinping.

During this trip, President Muizzu is scheduled to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping and leaders from other countries. He is also set to participate in high-level meetings of the SCO Summit. Notably, the President will deliver a statement at the SCO Plus meeting, highlighting the importance of international cooperation in addressing issues such as climate change, strategic economic disruptions, and geopolitical instability.

The SCO is a regional organization focused on political, economic, and defense matters in the Eurasian region, established by six countries in the area. It was founded in 2001 by China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.

The SCO, which is the world’s largest regional organization in terms of geography and population, now includes 10 member states. Additional countries participate as observers and dialogue partners. The Maldives is a dialogue partner of the SCO.
