President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu announced today that he has decided to allocate a fixed percentage of state revenue to the judiciary in next year’s budget to provide financial empowerment to the sector. In a post on X, the President stated that financial independence is the most crucial factor for the judiciary to function independently, and discussions were held in yesterday’s cabinet meeting regarding ways to facilitate this. The President said that the judiciary has lacked financial and administrative independence until now, and consultations have been made to bring about a significant change with the budget to be passed for the coming year.

He said that it was decided yesterday to allocate a fixed percentage of state revenue and disburse those funds as block grants under a specific procedure. “It has been decided to allocate a certain percentage of state revenue, disburse those funds as block grants under a specific procedure, and provide full financial autonomy to the judiciary to spend within a system where they have complete financial authority,” the President said in his post on X.

The President stated that this percentage would be higher than the budget ceilings previously set for the judiciary. He also mentioned that work has begun on making the necessary legal, technical, and systemic changes related to this decision. The lack of financial independence has always been highlighted by members of the judiciary as an obstacle to working independently.
