President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has called for the participation of citizens from all islands in formulating the country’s 20-year National Development Plan. The President made this statement during his address to the people of M. Mulaku. In the meeting with Mulaku residents, the President said that his vision is for the Maldives to become a developed nation by 2040, on par with the world’s advanced countries. He added that this goal can only be achieved through the development of islands regardless of population size.

“This plan requires full consultation and participation from the public and councils. We want the direction of the country’s development to align with what the people want. We don’t want people’s development to be disrupted due to political changes. That’s why we’re writing this plan, giving it legal authority, and protecting it,” the President said. He stated that the government’s announced Maldives 2.0 project is also a significant part of the National Development Plan. As such, he said that connecting all government services through a single network and establishing a transparent system through this project would be the most important work in curbing corruption and maintaining public trust in the government.

“Councils, ministries, the banking system, companies, and even judicial services will be connected and services will be structured transparently,” the President said. He stated that very important work of the Maldives 2.0 project will be carried out in the 2027 and early 2028 budgets. He also said that this system will become one that citizens can rely on for all services. Therefore, the President said that the government will finalize and implement the 20-year development plan with the full consent of the people.

The National Development Plan will be inaugurated next January. The government has revealed that the plan will be shared with the public and finalized with their full consent, with the aim to start implementing the plan in July.
