President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has amended the decree on determining important projects to be implemented under the economic policy for public benefit. In decree number 6/2025 issued today, the President stated that these amendments were made as he deemed it necessary to change the previously announced projects and their minimum investment amounts, as per Article 5(m)(3) of Law No. 2/99 (Maldives Tourism Act).

The appendix of this decree specifies the projects determined by the government under this policy, their locations, and the minimum expenditure required for each project. These projects include developing airports in various islands across the Maldives, including two additional airports in Huvadhoo Atoll and Hadhdhunmathi, and an international airport in Southern Huvadhoo Atoll. In the tourism sector, coastal tourism projects in L. Gan and Addu City have been decided.

Additionally, it has been decided to reclaim 15 hectares of land from K. Giravaru North Lagoon for the “Hope Island” project, aimed at providing treatment and rehabilitation programs for children at risk of offending. Similarly, 30 hectares will be reclaimed from the same lagoon for the “Central Prison Complex” project. Projects aimed at protecting the Maldives’ independence, sovereignty, and maintaining national peace have also been included under this policy.

Housing projects include social housing schemes across the Maldives and land reclamation in Rasmale, Gulhifalhu, Giravaru Lagoon, and North Thilafushi. Road construction and utility services establishment in reclaimed islands nationwide have also been decided. Furthermore, several causeway link projects connecting various islands have been included. The decree also mentions the establishment of a high-performance center.
