For the first time since COVID-19, English Premier League teams have spent a record amount. The 20 clubs in the world’s most popular league have spent up to 3.19 billion pounds in this transfer window. Champions Liverpool made the biggest expenditure in this transfer window. While spending a total of 446.5 million pounds, Liverpool has also bought Newcastle’s forward Alexander Isak for a league record amount of 125 million pounds. Bayer Leverkusen’s attacking midfielder Florian Wirtz was also purchased for over 100 million pounds. Additionally, Liverpool has sold Luis Diaz anaz and Darwin Nunez. After deducting the income received, Liverpool’s net spend stands at 228 million pounds.
Chelsea, the Club World Cup champions, made the second-highest expenditure. That club has spent 285 million pounds. Arsenal, who competed most fiercely for the title in the past three seasons, ranks third in spending. That club spent 255 million pounds. In contrast, by selling players, Coach Mikel Arteta’s team only received nine million pounds. Among the clubs not in the top six, Manchester United, Newcastle, and Nottingham Forest made the biggest expenditures. Despite selling Isak, Newcastle’s net spend is at a 98 million pound loss. Nottingham Forest also spent 205 million while not making any profit from player sales. Manchester United spent 250 million pounds on player acquisitions.
The English league is also the highest-spending league among Europe’s top five leagues. While that league spent 3.19 billion pounds, the Italian league made the second-highest expenditure. That league spent 1 billion pounds, while the Spanish league, which includes Real Madrid and Barcelona, spent roughly half of this, only 591 million pounds. The German Bundesliga spent 739 million. And the French league has spent 552 million pounds.
