With the highest warning for a powerful typhoon issued for southern regions of China and Hong Kong, schools have been closed, and hundreds of flights and other transportation services have been suspended. The typhoon, named “Wipha,” is currently 60 kilometers offshore from Hong Kong and is moving towards southern China, according to meteorological agencies. With wind speeds predicted to reach 73 miles per hour, warnings of significant dangers for Hong Kong have been issued.
The Hong Kong Airport Authority stated that about 500 flights have been canceled today alone. China’s state news agency Xinhua reported that the highest alert levels have been issued in Hainan and Guangdong provinces. Additionally, all flights scheduled for this morning in Shenzhen, Zhuhai, and Macau cities have been either canceled or postponed. In Hong Kong, over 200 people are currently seeking shelter in government-operated temporary shelters, while authorities have reported numerous incidents of trees falling due to strong winds.
Furthermore, Friday classes in all schools and daycare centers have been suspended by relevant authorities, and rail services have also been reduced. Before heading towards Hong Kong, this typhoon has already impacted the Philippines. There, due to strong winds and heavy rainfall, more than 400 houses have been damaged, and over 43,000 people have been forced to seek temporary shelter.
