The Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee yesterday passed a proposal to recommend the suspension of Police Commissioner Ismail Naveen and six other police officers to the relevant authorities. This decision was made during confidential meetings held by the committee, in connection with alleged corruption cases related to the police welfare company, POLCO, and several other matters.
Among these seven individuals are a Superintendent of Police and Assistant Commissioners. The committee’s report will need to be passed by the Parliament floor. Among the officers proposed for action due to corruption allegations, the committee had previously highlighted a case involving ACP Mohamed Daawood last month. According to a committee report, this involved allegations of illicit funds being deposited into the accounts of some of his family members. Although Daawood denied these allegations, he has been relieved of his duties as the head of Hulhumalé Police since the first day of last month. The Public Accounts Committee has been investigating corruption cases related to POLCO for some time, and the committee’s Vice Chairman, Ahmed Nazim, previously stated that the continued presence of implicated individuals in high-ranking positions would lead to a conflict of interest, and that there was sufficient evidence to warrant a criminal investigation.
