The People’s Majlis has approved the appointment of Dr. Aishath Ramila as the President of the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM).
The parliamentary approval follows a review by the Committee on Human Rights and Gender regarding the President’s nomination of Dr. Ramila for the post. The committee concluded its evaluation by endorsing her fitness for the leadership role.
Dr. Aishath Ramila was initially approved as a member of the HRCM during a parliamentary session held on October 29 last year. She was subsequently appointed to the commission on December 3.
Upon the President’s submission of her nomination for the commission’s presidency, the Human Rights and Gender Committee reviewed the matter and granted unanimous approval. Her appointment as President was finalized during today’s extraordinary parliamentary session, held outside the regular term, with a unanimous vote of 38 members.
The process to appoint a new head for the commission commenced following the expiration of the term of former President Mariyam Muna. With the conclusion of Muna’s tenure, the presidency of the HRCM became vacant. Under the law, the President of the Republic appoints a chairperson to the commission from among its members, subject to the approval of the People’s Majlis.
The HRCM is composed of five members. Along with Dr. Aishath Ramila, the commission includes Vice President Mohamed Shafeeq Mahmood, and members Samaau Ahmed Najeeb, Ismail Habeeb, and Ahmed Maqsoom.
