Over Three Hundred Thousand Tourists to Guesthouses

Statistics from the Ministry of Tourism and Environment show that more than 300,000 tourists have spent their holidays in guesthouses out of the total tourists who have visited the Maldives so far this year. A total of 1.4 million tourists have arrived in the Maldives year to date. According to the latest statistics from the Ministry of Tourism, a total of 1,416,141 tourists have visited the Maldives so far this year. This is a 9.1 percent increase compared to the number of tourists who visited during the same period last year. During the same period last year, 1,298,289 tourists visited the Maldives.

Of the tourists who have visited the Maldives so far this year, 1,039,352 tourists spent their holidays in resorts. While 309,490 tourists spent their holidays in guesthouses, 37,282 tourists have spent their holidays in hotels. In addition, statistics from the Ministry of Tourism show that 29,018 tourists spent their holidays on safari vessels.

• Russia – 168,288 tourists
• United Kingdom – 129,792 tourists
• Italy – 102,053 tourists
• Germany – 97,534 tourists

While the government is making special efforts to expand the guesthouse business throughout the Maldives, 891 guesthouses are currently operating in 20 atolls of the Maldives. This capacity of 15,284 beds represents 24 percent of the total beds in the Maldives tourism sector. Last year, 2 million tourists visited the Maldives. And the government has set a target to bring 2.3 million tourists to the Maldives before the end of this year. The government is undertaking many initiatives to further develop the tourism industry to achieve this goal.
