The National Mental Health Department has revealed that more than 70,000 individuals have sought medical assistance for mental health conditions across various hospitals in the Maldives over the past three years. Research further indicates that one in every five Maldivians exhibits symptoms of depression.
In line with the government’s commitment to prioritizing mental wellbeing, comprehensive coverage for all mental health treatments has been integrated into the national health insurance scheme, Aasandha. Furthermore, multiple ministries and organizations are collaborating to build professional capacity within this sector and provide essential support to patients. The overarching objective of these initiatives is to foster a mentally resilient society, thereby enhancing the nation’s overall productivity.
