The Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation has announced that over 3000 tonnes of cargo have been transported so far through the Sea-to-Air cargo service. This is a brand new service introduced by the current government. The Sea-to-Air cargo service commenced on May 15, 2024. The Sea-to-Air cargo service is a practice adopted by many countries around the world, bringing significant economic benefits to those nations. The Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation stated that from May 15, 2024, to November 7, 2025, 17 airlines have joined the Sea-to-Air cargo service, and goods have been dispatched to 24 countries via air. During this period, the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation also stated that Sea-to-Air Cargo has transported 3617 tonnes of cargo.
The Sea-to-Air cargo service is being provided jointly by MACL (Maldives Airports Company Limited) and MPL (Maldives Ports Limited). Turkish Airlines was the first to join this service. As the Sea-to-Air cargo service expands, the government states that this initiative has already injected millions of dollars into the Maldivian economy. Given that the Maldives is a country served by numerous international airlines, the government believes there are ample opportunities for the expansion of this service.
