
According to the latest tourism statistics, the number of tourists who have spent their holidays in the Maldives so far this year has exceeded 1.5 million. As per the Daily Tourism Report released by the Ministry of Tourism, by the end of last Sunday, 1,520,699 tourists had visited the Maldives. This represents a 9.7 percent increase compared to the 1,386,554 tourists who visited during the same period last year. The statistics show that the average number of tourists arriving in the Maldives daily up to that point in the year stands at 6,232.
During the first week of the ongoing September, the Maldives welcomed 33,733 tourists, which is a 23.6 percent increase compared to the same period last year. China continues to maintain its position as the top source market for tourists to the Maldives so far this year. Accordingly, the 240,828 Chinese tourists who spent their holidays in the Maldives account for 15.8 percent of the total arrivals. Following China, Russia, UK, Italy, and Germany have also sent over 100,000 tourists each to the Maldives so far this year.
The statistics also show that 73.4 percent of the tourists who visited the Maldives during this period spent their holidays in resorts. Last year, for the first time in Maldivian history, the country welcomed two million tourists, and the government has set a target to increase this number to 2.3 million by the end of this year.
