
The number of containers cleared by Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) increased in the past month alone. Last year, the most cleared items were essential foodstuffs such as onions and eggs.
According to the latest statistics released by Maldives Ports Limited (MPL), the company cleared 6,663 TEUs in the past August. This includes 2,607 20-foot containers and 2,028 40-foot containers.
The statistics show that the company cleared 6,320 TEUs in July. This includes 2,380 20-foot containers and 1,970 40-foot containers. With this, the number of containers cleared by MPL in August has increased by 5.4 percent. According to the statistics released by MPL, the most cleared items from the Malé Commercial Harbor last month were essential foodstuffs such as eggs, onions, and potatoes.
Essential foodstuffs cleared by MPL:
• Eggs: 71,037 tons
• Onions: 55,581 tons
• Carrots: 31,966 tons
• Potatoes: 24,225 tons
• Tomatoes: 16,918 tons
• Pineapples: 12,384 tons
• Cabbage: 12,400 tons
• Bananas: 10,949 tons
According to the statistics, MPL cleared an average of 155 containers per day last month. This is a 7 percent increase compared to the average of 145 containers cleared daily in July. As the number of containers being cleared increases, MPL continues to work on expediting its operations. The company states that the time taken to clear goods has been reduced significantly compared to before.
Additionally, MPL has decided to establish an electronic vehicle queue at the Hulhumalé Terminal to streamline the process of releasing goods. To improve the current system of releasing goods, MPL has decided to implement and launch this electronic vehicle queue starting from the 21st of this month.
