Minister of Education Dr. Ismail Shafeeu has stated that the number of students studying A-Levels in government schools has increased by 77% following the pilot program initiated by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu after assuming leadership of the Maldives. The Minister said this while speaking at the 5th session of the National Top Achievers’ Award Ceremony.

Speaking at this ceremony, Minister of Education Dr. Ismail Shafeeu noted that the number of A-Level students needs to increase. He said that the number of students who passed A-Levels in the 2024 examination has increased by 106 students compared to the previous year. The Minister also stated that the Ministry of Education is currently working to increase the number of students who can enter higher quality universities with better results.

Education Minister Dr. Ismail Shafeeu said that the pilot program initiated by the government to increase the number of students in grades 11 and 12 in 23 schools in the atolls, excluding Malé, has been successful. He stated that the number of A-Level students in government schools has increased by 77% compared to before. “With this program we started, the number of A-Level students in government schools increased by 77% compared to the previous year. And when combining government, public-private partnerships, and private schools, the total number of A-Level students across the Maldives increased by 38%,” the Minister said.

The Minister said that still a large number of students are being deprived of A-Level education. He stated that the Education Ministry is working to introduce the A-Level opportunity facilitation program, which was piloted by the government in 23 schools in the atolls, to the batch that just completed O-Levels, and has now decided to implement this program in Malé as well. The Minister also noted that there is space available in CHSE in Malé and Hulhumalé to carry out this work. Education Minister Dr. Ismail Shafeeu also said that the government’s goal is to eliminate the policy of excluding students and to establish A-Levels as the final stage of school completion in the Maldives by the end of these 5 years.
