Nomination of Dr. Rameela for HRCM Presidency Referred to Parliamentary Committee for Review

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has formally submitted the nomination of former Cabinet Minister Dr. Aishath Rameela to the People’s Majlis for the position of President of the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM).

The Parliament approved Dr. Aishath Rameela’s appointment as a member of the HRCM during its session on October 29 last year, and she was officially sworn into the commission on December 3.

Her appointment to the HRCM followed the conclusion of the term of the former commission president, Mariyam Muna. With the end of Muna’s tenure, the presidency of the HRCM has remained vacant. According to the law, the President of the Republic appoints a chairperson for the commission from among its existing members, subject to the approval of the People’s Majlis.

Dr. Rameela served as the inaugural Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare under the current administration. However, she resigned from her ministerial post on December 1, 2024, due to health considerations. President Muizzu has now proposed her to lead the HRCM, and the matter has been referred to the Parliament’s Committee on Human Rights and Gender for further deliberation and review.

The Human Rights Commission currently comprises five members: Vice President Mohamed Shafeeq Mahmood, Samaau Ahmed Najeeb, Ismail Habeeb, Ahmed Magsoom, and Dr. Aishath Rameela.
