Thousands of people attended the funeral of many of the 72 people killed in recent unrest in Nepal. The unrest began on September 8 when the government decided to ban certain social media platforms. Protests against this decision turned into violence, resulting in Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli being forced to resign.

With the fall of his government, a transitional government has been formed in Nepal at the request of the protesters. Former Chief Justice Sushila Karki has been appointed as the transitional Prime Minister. The 73-year-old Karki is the first woman to assume this position. The unrest was brought under control by deploying armed forces to the streets, and after the decision to ban social media platforms was reversed and Prime Minister Oli resigned.

‘Gen Z’ youth played a leading role in the protests against Oli’s government in defense of social media. The death toll in the clashes between these youth-led unrest and the police has risen to 72. Additionally, more than 2,100 people have been injured.

The unrest saw scenes of damage to state and government property. There were also scenes of arson and significant damage to government and private buildings and property. The funeral of many of those killed in the protests was held at a church in the capital, Kathmandu. Two ministers from the transitional government and police also attended their funeral. A salute of honor was given as a mark of respect for the deceased.

Nepal is now returning to normalcy after the unrest. However, the country’s economy has faced significant losses. The country’s tourism authority said that the number of tourists visiting the country has decreased by 30% due to the unrest. With the fall of Oli’s government, transitional Prime Minister Karki has announced that a new election will be held on March 5, 2026.
