The Western defense alliance (NATO) has issued a warning to Russia, stating that it is prepared to take defensive and military measures to ensure the security and safety of its member states. NATO’s warning to Russia comes after reports of Russian military aircraft entering the airspace of Estonia, a member state of the alliance. Estonia reported that three Russian MiG-31 military aircraft entered its airspace on September 19. Furthermore, Estonia alleged that these aircraft flew within its airspace for 12 minutes. NATO has condemned this incident. NATO also stated that it would take military and other measures to ensure the defense of its member states.
The Russian military aircraft that entered Estonian airspace departed the area only after NATO military jets were dispatched to deter them. In the preceding week, Russian military drones had also entered Polish airspace. NATO military aircraft engaged some of these drones and shot them down. Following the incident in Poland, the alliance announced its decision to strengthen military defensive measures in NATO member states on its Eastern flank. This measure is also supported by the United States, considered one of NATO’s most powerful members. While addressing the United Nations (UN) General Assembly, President Donald Trump stated that he believed NATO member states have the right to attack Russian military aircraft that enter their airspace.
These accusations by the alliance, regarding Russian military aircraft entering the airspace of NATO member states, come amidst a fierce war between Russia and Ukraine. Russia began its war against Ukraine in 2022 after Ukraine refused to halt its efforts to join NATO. Russia perceives NATO as a threat to its existence, security, and safety. Furthermore, NATO is providing military and financial assistance to Ukraine in its war against Russia. Regarding the incident of Russian military aircraft entering Estonian airspace, U.S. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth called Estonian Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur. He condemned Russia’s actions and assured Estonia of the United States’ continued solidarity with NATO members.
