Maldives Ports Limited has cleared more than 4,000 sacks of onions. Due to bad weather conditions, cargo ships were unable to reach the Maldives, making it difficult to clear onions. As a result, stores were unable to supply onions, making it hard to obtain them. Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) stated that their cargo operations worked through the night to unload and clear cargo from 3 ships. MPL also mentioned that this included 4,720 sacks of onions.

In addition, MPL said that they are continuing to unload cargo from a ship that arrived at the Male’ Commercial Harbor yesterday as weather permits, and that ship also brought 3,840 sacks of onions.

Due to the scarcity of onions, STO has also stated that they are working on bringing a shipment of onions from India. While onions are typically imported by private businesses, STO does not regularly import onions. However, STO provides assistance in situations where there are difficulties in obtaining commonly used food items. STO has stated that once the shipments from the ships at the port reach the market, there will be some relief to the onion shortage. While the bad weather has caused difficulties in obtaining onions, this time of year is also a period of bad weather for India, which is the main source of onion imports for the Maldives.
