
More than 260,000 people have registered for the government’s digital identity card, e-Pass, according to Dr. Mohamed Kinaanath, State Minister at the Ministry of Home Affairs and Professional Development. The State Minister said this while speaking at the opening ceremony of a workshop held to gather opinions on the newly drafted Digital Identity Bill.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the workshop, Dr. Mohamed Kinaanath, State Minister at the Ministry of Home Affairs and Professional Development, said that a lot of work is being done to further strengthen the government’s digital identity system. The State Minister said that work on a Digital Identity Bill has also been started for this purpose. Dr. Kinaanath also said that with this bill, the security of information of application users will be ensured.
Dr. Kinaanath said that the new bill will have positive effects on the e-Pass system, which is currently being used as the government’s digital identity. In this regard, Dr. Kinaanath noted that the system will gain public trust and provide additional security. Dr. Kinaanath said that so far, more than 260,000 Maldivians have started using e-Pass.

“Our goal is to provide every digital service in a way that ensures its security. And to gain public trust in digital services,” said Dr. Kinaanath.
The State Minister said that work is currently underway to draft important bills under the country’s Digital Transformation Policy. In this regard, Kinaanath said that the Data Security Bill and the Cyber Security Bill have now been sent to the Attorney General’s Office. Dr. Kinaanath also said that work is currently underway to draft the Maldives 2.0 Bill and the Artificial Intelligence Bill.
More than 90 people from relevant agencies are participating in the workshop held to gather opinions on the newly drafted Digital Identity Bill. The purpose of this workshop is to seek ideas and consultations before drafting the second draft of the bill.
