MMA Replenishes 20 Rufiyaa Banknote Stock Amid Shortage

The Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) has imported a fresh shipment of 20 Rufiyaa banknotes from the “Ran Dhihafaheh” currency series to address a shortage in the existing stock. In an official statement released today, the central bank confirmed that the new batch was brought into the country after current reserves of the 20 Rufiyaa denomination reached low levels. This follows a similar replenishment earlier this month, when the MMA also brought in a new stock of 100 Rufiyaa notes due to dwindling supplies.

The “Ran Dhihafaheh” banknote series was officially introduced into circulation in January 2016. Unlike previous currency series, these notes are designed to be more secure, durable, and modern. Key security enhancements include serial numbers that fluoresce under ultraviolet (UV) light. Additionally, the denomination of the note becomes visible within a dedicated box under UV light, a feature that remains hidden under normal lighting conditions.

Furthermore, certain patterns that appear monochromatic in standard light reveal dual colors when exposed to UV light. The “Ran Dhihafaheh” series also incorporates inclusive design elements, such as raised tactile features, specifically developed to help visually impaired individuals easily distinguish between different denominations.
