Representatives of Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump convened in Davos, Switzerland, to discuss potential pathways to ending the conflict between Ukraine and Russia, which has persisted since February 2022. President Trump has consistently pledged to bring the Ukraine-Russia war to a resolution. In alignment with this commitment, the United States has been engaging in separate high-level discussions with European powers, Ukraine, and Russia. However, a formal ceasefire agreement has yet to be reached.

The meeting, held on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, included U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and President Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner. Russia was represented by Special Envoy Kirill Dmitriev. Following the discussions, the Russian delegation noted that significant progress was made and suggested there is an increasing understanding of Russia’s perspective on the matter. Mr. Witkoff also characterized the two-hour meeting as highly productive.

These diplomatic developments occur amidst heightened concerns from European allies regarding President Trump’s rhetoric, including his remarks concerning Greenland. European nations supporting Ukraine have expressed apprehension that the U.S. administration might pressure Ukraine into ceding territory to Russia as part of a settlement.
