The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has scheduled its primary elections to be held in schools this coming Friday. These primaries are conducted to select candidates to represent the party in the upcoming Local Council Elections and Women’s Development Committee elections. With only one exception in the atolls, ballot boxes will be placed in schools across all islands, including the Greater Male’ Area.

In the Male’ region, voting will take place at Majeediyya School, Galolhu Madharusa, Hiriya School, and Iskandhar School. In Hulhumale’, the primaries will be held at Rehendhi School and Kamil Didi School, while Muhyiddin School will serve as the polling station for Villimale’.

The party further clarified that ballot boxes previously scheduled for Kalaafaanu School have been relocated to Majeediyya School. This includes polling stations for Hithadhoo Moolekede, Feydhoo Maadhala, Fuvahmulah City Dhoodigan, and Thinadhoo City. According to the list released by the MDP, a total of 152 candidates are contesting in this primary, including aspirants for council seats, island council presidencies, and positions within the Women’s Development Committees.

While political party activities were previously restricted in schools, the current administration has revised this policy. The new regulation allows such events to be held during weekends or school holidays, provided they do not disrupt educational activities. The government has assured that this opportunity will be provided equitably to all political parties. Consequently, the upcoming local council primary elections are being organized in schools across both the capital and the atolls.
