The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has alleged that the audit report detailing corruption issues in the management of Fenaka Corporation during the last three years of the MDP government is a politically motivated report issued by the government after intimidating the Auditor General Ibrahim Niyazi. The audit report states that while Fenaka conducted transactions worth over two billion rufiyaa during those three years, a large portion of it was spent without proper procedures. It also highlighted that work worth over a billion rufiyaa was awarded to various companies without bidding.
In a statement released by the MDP regarding this report, they said that opening an independent institution’s office at night and publishing an audit report written by political individuals from the Auditor General’s Office is something the party condemns. The MDP states that President Muizzu’s attempt to consolidate all state powers and issuing reports by threatening the Auditor General with dismissal is evidence of the failure of the oversight system for state institutions.
The MDP said that if any illegal activities have occurred, they welcome a fair trial to determine the outcome. However, they will only respond to the stories spread by the government’s “propaganda machine” in a court of law. The MDP also alleges that this is a report issued for political purposes to cover up government corruption, prompted by the enthusiasm building for the MDP rally to be held on October 3. In connection with this report, Ahmed Saeed Mohamed, the former Managing Director of Fenaka, has been sentenced to four years in prison by the Criminal Court today on corruption charges.
